- Curtis| 1 replyI got a letter not too long ago from "Wells Fargo" with this number on it. I have not determined if it is legitimate or not though.
- vizipoI received a letter today also from Wells Fargo with this number on it. It was to late to call so I'll check it later.
- Lainee| 2 repliesI received a letter dated 12/18/2015 which appeared to be from Wells Fargo Card Services and Consumer Lending. The letter stated that Wells Fargo inadvertently transferred an account of ours and after an internal audit the account was transferred back and that they would not ask us to repay the remaining account balance. We have NEVER had any credit card or consumer accounts with Wells Fargo. The number listed on the letter was 888-851-5290. This is NOT a Wells Fargo phone number. If you receive a similar letter please contact Wells Fargo at 800-869-3557. Wells Fargo confirmed that this letter was not sent on their behalf and that phone number 888-851-5290 is not affiliated with them.

- rob replies to LaineeGot the same one. Thank you for the info.
- Tammy| 1 replyMy mother also got the Wells-Fargo letter. She showed it to me and I immediately got a bad feeling about it. She will be calling the real Wells-Fargo in the morning to let them know.
- BigA replies to TammyTake the letter and the envelope it came in to the post office and have them forward it to the postal inspectors.
- SohSReceived the same letter. The Rep verified my name/address which I figured they had since it was on the letter. Then Rep asked for my "Sosh" meaning Soc Sec. This immediately told me this was not a professional representing a financial institution. When I refused to give it he said I could go to any Wells Fargo bank but I would still have to give my SS. I then asked to speak to a Spvr. While I was on hold I noticed there were no Wellls Fargo advertisements being played. Supv came on line and again asked for my last 4 in order to get any info. I told her that I would go the bank and check it out. Not sure if legit.

- CWG40 replies to LaineeIf you received this by US mail, take the letter down to the local post office and have the postal authorities take a look at it. This may be some form of mail fraud.
- Pamela| 2 repliesI received this letter 2 times.
The first time I brought it to my local branch. The on duty manager said it was fraud and threw it away in the garbage. The seconded letter I decided to call Wells Fargo and after being transferred 5-6 times I was connected with the Wells Fargo Card Services Collection Unit. They said there were two letters sent out to me according to the records they have on me. (Matching my Social Security number). -- Note: I did not call the number on the letter I called the toll free number Wells Fargo has on their official website.
The Collections Agent told me she wasn't familiar with what or how the Well Fargo Department that is handling these letters and to fax over the letter to them at 1-866-750-6267 with my contact information so they can call me regarding this letter.
Wells Fargo does use the black and white letter w/o the Red Wells Fargo logo for Card Services Collection Units. The letter is legitimate.
If you want to check it out for yourself you can call Wells Fargo yourself and ask for a member Collections Team for Card Services.- Caller: Wells Fargo Card Services

- Pamela replies to Pamela| 1 replyI should have included this is the original post: I did have a Credit Card sold by Wells Fargo to a Collection Service. The letter states there was a Administrative Error and they owe me approximately $300.00.
To anyone who says they never had an account or a collections account from Wells Fargo should still check into this in case there was some kind of fraud in your name. Check your Credit Score/Identity also for theft. - Trina replies to PamelaDid you get a refund?
- Will| 3 repliesThis is a legitimate letter & check. If you have ever had any dealings with Wells Fargo, or any affiliates of Wells Fargo, you can take the letter and check to your bank. They can check the check against their systems to find out if the check is legitimate. I was kind of afraid of it at the beginning as in the first one I received I had contacted Wells Fargo and they took several weeks to get back to me and send out a check. I received this 2nd check out of the blue, and I took it to the bank to be sure. They checked against their systems and the account/routing numbers on the check and it was legitimate.
So whoever it was a few posts above me who's banker threw the check out your banker obviously didn't do the right thing...although for you its too late, but in the future you may want to have them look into it before just telling you it was fake and throwing it away.
At some point Wells Fargo started going back through old debts they have sold, and have found errors in the records...so several people have been contacted by phone, mail, etc. regarding this issue. If you call them back during business hours they are extremely helpful, and will assist you in getting the matter taken care of...granted its a bank, so it may take days or weeks to get it settled but they will work with you and get it fixed. If you received the notices in error you may want to speak with them anyhow in case there has been fraud against you, your accounts, etc.- Caller: Wells Fargo

- Question replies to WillInteresting. People look things up because they want to know more or because they simply don't know. Yet you knew everything there is to know about this phone number but looked it up anyway. Now why would you do that?
- gd| 4 repliesI had suspicions about this after receiving the letter -- I called the Wells Fargo Financial fraud number (800-247-9215) and they confirmed that this is legit.
- Badge714 replies to gd| 2 repliesThen why are you here? Why would you look a phone number up that you know all about? And why are you posting positive information about what could be a scam? All questions that answer themselves.
- gd replies to Badge714I'm here to help out other people who have questions about this number, like I did.
- JB| 7 repliesYoure a liar and I would have to suspect youre working for the scam. I just hung up with Wells Fargo regarding a letter we received saying we were owed several thousand dollars due to an administrative error. I called the number on the letter. Its to no one. They want the account number left on their voicemail because that number references you live where they sent the letter which confirms the next phase of identity theft. Now they know you do in fact live there otherwise you would not have called. The letter said they sent us a check for the error but it was returned to them and this letter was to confirm we lived there. HA!!! Who falls for this crap.
@gd - You are a liar.- Caller: Wells Fargo

- Kevin| 9 repliesTotally legit. I was VERY skeptical but received the individuals full name and this is a division of Wells Fargo. Lucky for me because I'm getting $5,000 I wasn't expecting! It was from a past debt that apparently was an overpayment. They only verify the last 4 because they need to ensure it's actually you. My debt was from over 10 years ago! WOOHOO!
