Honest computer companies do NOT cold-call people to tell them their computers need fixing!

If the scammer accessed your computer, they probably did one or more of the following:
    • Disabled the anti-virus software
    • Added a lot of malware to the computer
    • Copied the Contact List (so they can email the soon-to-be ex-friends)
    • Copied any financial data or passwords they could find
    • Compromised the ID
    • "Zombied" the computer, so it would respond to THEIR commands sent via internet
    • Deleted some important files
    • Asked for money to repair the damage they caused

    Now, what can you do?
    1.  Pull the cables on the computer, so it cannot access the internet.
    2.  Change ALL  passwords stored on the computer
    3.  Run FULL malware scans on the computer, in "SAFE" mode!
    4.  Change the passwords again, particularly if the malware scans showed anything
    5.  Contact bank and credit card companies
    6.  Sign up for credit monitoring, and check the status frequently
    7.  Possibly bring the computer to a local repair shop, and tell them the story.
    8.  Tell friends what happened, so they can be aware of strange emails from you
    9.  Plug in the computers only AFTER all the above have been done
    10.  Change the passwords on all online accounts.

Remember, honest computer companies do NOT cold-call people to tell them their computers need fixing!

You were exposed to one of these scams, and you might be susceptible to others mentioned on this site:

They will not stop.  They are Indian scammers and as such are beyond the reach of US law.

Call blocker might be your best bet.

the number 888 979 2362 calls my phone several times a day.  I try to answer, but no one is on the line.  I did get someone once claiming to be our "Tech department", I asked him to take our number off his list.  since then when it calls no one is on the line.

This type of abuse needs a remedy

they have called a few times and each time I answer I humor them for a while to see what [***] they have come up with before droping my computer science diploma into the conversation at which point they hang up, I figure if they are going to call anyway I might as well have fun with it, but for getting them to stop calling.....well each time they call i tell them that I program and have a deep understanding of the windows opperating system and they continue to call back so meh, use call block

These jerks just called trying to get me to run a program that would give them remote access to my Windows machine. They use downloads from 456usa dot com, which is registered in India.

They claimed to be Microsoft tech support.

I grew tired of playing cat and mouse with them (playing dumb, making lots of mistakes) and finally hung up on them.

Called once and told them NOT to call again. Called again 5 minutes later. Told them to stop or I would call police. Asked how they got an unlisted number.said they were from Windows and they received a message from my  computer that Ivhad a virus.  Told him you don't even speak English. After again telling them NOT to call again he got very vulgar about what he wanted to do to me.

Ok, so I know this suggestion is very unorthodox and I wouldn't recommend it but I can tell you all that it worked.  Received the same call that all of you are complaining about.  I set my 18 year old son on the task of just "dealing with it" and put him on the phone with the "Tech" caller.  My son imitated the caller's Indian language, told the guy that he was in fact from Windows tech support, mimicked him, and pretty much just kept poking at the hornet nest.  After 5 minutes, the caller called my son a few choice words (it's cute how Indian's say "a$$hole") and hung up.
Although I really thought that I would start receiving calls at 3am and surely my computer would definitely be hacked, none of it happened and I never received a call again.  That was 4 months ago.  And all has been well.
    Hope this helps.

Caller ID said Toll Free Caller, didn't leave a message.  Called the number back and got a recorded message saying the number was disconnected or not in service.  Gee.... that was fast for a legit caller!
