They have called my cell, my home and my work within 10 minutes.  I called them back and told them to quit calling me and was told this would remain on my file and good luck.  I get these calls several times a day and it isn't always the same number - how do I stop them!!!?

I received a call on my home phone claiming I was named in a legal matter, I asked them in what it was regards to. The caller who would not give their name, stated I was named in a lawsuit. The so called claim stated I used and online check advance in 2009 a deposit to Wells Fargo Bank and how would I like to settle this debt? She further stated that I could pay $591.00 now or if the case went to small claims I would have to pay $4000.00 and suffer a wage garnishment. I informed her I did not even have a checking account in 2009 which I is true. I asked her what was the complaintants phone number she gave me 971-404-3191 I called the number a man answered and informed me that I had the wrong number. I called the number back and he all of sudden knew something about my previous call from 901-866-5927 he stated that a dispute has already been filed in regards from the 901 caller. Something fishy going on here.

A phone call, email or text message from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient evidence of debt.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:

    * Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money.   ["Written" means snailmailed - US Mail ... not emailed or texted]

    Source:
    https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via Green Dot, MoneyGram, Western Union, prepaid gift card or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.

IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit  the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:
    http://www.consumerfinance.gov/blog/debtcollection/

If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

A prerecorded call with a message that I was named in a legal matter I waited and hit 0 when prompted. The woman on the line claimed I obtained a cash advance in 2009 which was deposited into a Wells Fargo Account which at that time I did not even have a checking account. She informed me that I would need to settle the account today for $591.00 today or if it went to court that I would have to pay $4000.00 plus suffer a wage garnishment. I asked her the complainants phone number she told me it was 971-404-3191 when I contacted that number a male answered and informed me that I had the wrong number so I hit redial and all of sudden he knew something in regards to my call from the 901 caller.

Same scam calls from 2 different numbers so far.  843-214-2600 South Carolina and 901-866-5927 Tennessee.  Saying I was named in a lawsuit.  Both left voice mails with the same recorded message.  I think it's time our government does something about these kinds of calls.

I suggest people go to credit karma...if you look are you credit report, under public records it would show you if charges have been filed against in a particular county, etc...

I block the phone number, but then immediately get another call from a different number.  It's never ending.  These scammers constantly call my cell and I don't answer so they call my work manager.  Is embarrassing to say the least.  They should be shot and hung out to dry for the birds to eat them!

I received this call today with threats of a lawsuit and wage garnishment based off of a payday advance loan I took out in 2012.  The address she gave me was a location in Jacksonville, FL and she said the lawsuit was being filed in Duval County.  I've never lived there.  She had the last 4 digits of my ssn.  She hung up on me twice and was very rude on the phone.  I'm currently dealing with an identity theft case and wanted to make sure it wasn't something legit.  When I asked if she would send me information regarding the lawsuit, she said that my attorney would assist me with this.  Thanks for this post, everyone.  I wish there was a way to handle this type of stuff and throw them in jail.

Got a call from this number this morning. Since I don't owe any debt  (student loan is in deferment till December of 2016 since I'm still an active student) I consider them scammers and fraudsters. I don't even bother to communicate with them because they are simply scammers.
You can just block them on your phone. If they change to a different number to call, block that number as well. Just block whichever number they call you on.

I contacted the BBB and gave them a list of all the numbers calling me and filed a report with federal trade commission.. aside from blocking them calls wont stop  but at least they will be filed and if enough things get filed they can follow a suit if they BBB or FTC is needed.

Scamming, fraud, bad business practice, whatever you want to call them.  I kept getting calls Unknown name. They would leave very vague messages, have the wrong name, different numbers etc,  I just had my voicemail account suspended, so when someone calls, and I don't recognize the number , I just don't answer, it will ring then they will get a recording saying the number is no longer working, its a dead number. and as I get the numbers I block them with an app. Seems to be working no more harassing, threatning phone calls or messages.  If they are legit, they know how to get ahold of someone.

It's a scam. Don't answer. Don't talk to them. If you ignore them there is a better a chance of them going away. It's tempting to play around with them but it's a waste of time. Do not send them any money. It is very difficult to catch these people because they just use different internet numbers. They could be anywhere in the world and the number they are calling you from could have your local area code. Please do not fall for this scam!
