- Darlene| 3 repliesThis is a call service looking for donations to the Police Association of Ontario. It says 905, which in Canada is a Outside the GTA area code, but the gentleman I talked to definitely had an American accent - certainly not Canadian.
- Caller: Unknown
- Call type: Non-profit organization
- Unknow replies to DarleneGot a call from this phone number, asked the donation to the Police Association. But it was very strange call, got me nervous by saying "calling from the Police Association, and this will be recorded ...". I don't believe it's real from police association.
- brat052| 3 repliesjust got acall, same method only they said my wife donated 45 dollars and they have not received payment. They wanted me to complete the transaction. I call my wife, she said she agreed to give them $20 but they keep calling back increasing the donation amount. I glad I googled the phone number, these guys werevery slick. You save me giving money to a scam. One question though, because theyrecorded mywife agreeing to $20 can they do anything?

- Dave M| 1 replyTwo calls today, which I let go to voice mail. I didn't recognize the number and there was no text ID. No messages were left. BTW, the area that the 905 code includes is huge. It surrounds the city Toronto (416/647 codes) with Lake Ontario as the southern border. Parts of the 905 area can easily be upwards of 100 Km (60 miles) apart, and in fact my calls had (1) before the 905-429-2268.
I get about 6 garbage calls per day. - Jen replies to brat052| 1 replyI agreed to give $15 and they tried to up it to $45. I only agreed to donate because I called the local police station and they said it was real. I don't understand how they can be real and yet still try to up the donation?? They even sent mail trying to confirm the transaction...etc.
I doubt they can do anything even having her agree while being recorded. It's a DONATION, not a contract. If an organization tried to persue getting a measly $20 because they have a woman agreeing on a recording, there is something seriously wrong! - Jennypicked up on a long distance ring, said hello and there was a pause, a click and then a 'hello'. knew it was a telemarketer. I wish these guys would go away - i hung up but did star 69. THey call ALL the time!!!

- JayHow does one know if the call really is being recorded? Report the company to the BBB. A donation for charity is tax deductible and a receipt should be provided. What legitimate charitable organization would harass their donors?
- Caller: none

- R.A. Hicks replies to JenOver the holidays I visited my parents and while I was there my mother got a telemarketing call soliciting donations for the "Police Association". Today I did some googling to see what I could find about this call and found this page as well as http://forums.blueline.ca/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=17014&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a. According to the discussion at this latter page, the call is "legitimate" (although I wonder by what definition it qualifies for this status), but only 15% of the donations collected actually go to charity and the donations do not qualify for a charitable donation tax receipt.
IMO, this telemarketing campaign falls just short of an outright fraud: it manages to follow the letter of the law, but completely ignores the spirit of the law. That's rather ironic considering the organization they claim to represent. - mensa replies to DarleneGot same message previously. I was aked to leave cheque in my mail box. I said OK but ignored. They called back to say I hadn't left my cheque. I said I didn't have one. ( community boxes here in the boonies). I was told I could mail it in. However I never buy from the door or phone. So I asked for address and Postal Code. When I asked again of the P. Code it was different. I hung up after they thought I fell for this. I tried to call our police stn, but got a menu of detectives phone mail. Hung up to await new call. Never came. We have had numerous calls since, but never answer.
