- NotStupid| 4 repliesForeign accented individual named Nick Walker from department of legal affairs. Threatened legal action. I'd like to nuke em all...........don't call them back and don't believe this sorry low life POS individuals
- Caller: Department of Legal Affairs
- Mickey replies to NotStupidGot same message from same guy about 4 pm this afternoon (4 pm PST).
- Ginee| 1 replyForeign accent. A lady threatening me of being arrested within 24 hours.
This is not the first time. How can we stop those calls?- Caller: Legal affair
- Alfalfa replies to GineeThis is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
- michelle| 1 replyCaller with accent from dept of legal affairs saying I was going to be arrested.
- Caller: dept of legal affairs
- Alfalfa replies to michelleRead my post. They can't do anything to you. These are criminal extortionists hiding in overseas boiler rooms in corrupt and apathetic third world countries and out of the reach of US law enforcement using VOIP to alter their ID and locations. Contact your telecommunications provider for assistance with blocking the calls or invest in a call blocking device.
- Jnine replies to NotStupidJust received Call from fine woman that I could not understand stating legal action how do I protect myself from these jerks that are trying to scam me
- Allison| 1 replySame thing yesterday about 4:00PM EST from Nick Walker saying he is from the Dept of Legal Affairs threatening legal action.
- Call type: Prank
- Alfalfa replies to AllisonHere are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:
The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.
The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.
The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.
The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.
Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.
Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.
Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.
Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

- kr replies to NotStupid| 1 replyI just got the same phone call from a Nick Walker. He stated that they were calling about legal issues from the Department of legal affairs. He said that they had already started action with the local law enforcement. This was left on our voicemail. I have not replied and don't intend to. Thank goodness for Google and the internet.
- Don, Salem, OregonCaller with Indian accent left message. Identified himself as McWalter from "Department of Legal Affairs" threatening "law enforcement action". Sounded like he was reading from a script, but couldn't really understand what he saying. Requested returning his call.
- Caller: McWalter from Dept. of Legal Affairs
- Marc, UtahCalled at 5:30. Pause on pick up. Female. Slight accent. She asked for a prior resident. I said no one here by that name. She asked if I knew that person. I said no one by that name at this residence. She confirmed and, I think, said thank you and hung up.
- Caller: Not stated
- Sue replies to krits a scam! Said I owed taxes from 2009. Said they would be arresting my husband and I within 2 hours.
- Margaret, kansas| 1 replyVoicemail, barely understandable, not Midwestern. Claimed to be from Legal Affairs Department. Notice - no statement of whose Legal Affairs Department. Wanted a return call, but since the call was for someone who is a citizen in another country I don't think I will bother. Maybe these are the same people who call and claim to be from "your credit card company." Again - no name for the credit card, just "your credit card company."
There really is a reason why my answering message does not include my name.- Caller: Not stated
- Call type: Debt collector

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number. - RenerScam. They say they are from the Department of Legal Affairs. Said I didn't pay my taxes from 2009. Report them.

- BillThese Scammers Call You By Your Name (Apparently they are working from a list, that places your name with your information): I just received a call from a Woman who sounded India Indian, said She was from the Legal Affairs Department and that i was being Sued and wanted to know if I had received the papers... (She is the same sounding woman who has called my number before, pretending to be a Microsoft (Employee) Technician... informing me that I had a computer problem. I told her to hang on (while I tried to control my temper, but I couldn't) I returned to the phone, then I SCREAMED AT HER AND CALLED HER "A PIECE OF [***]!" then I said "YOUR THE SAME PERSON WHO HAS CALLED MY NUMBER IN THE PAST, PRETENDING TO BE A MICROSOFT TECHNICIAN, NOW, YOU'VE GOT A NEW SCAM! She seemed shaken up and said in a Rushed Fashion "Good Bye," then She hung up in my face... I'm still on the Ceiling!!! I own a Panasonic Telephone System that has call blocking, her number 909 237-9965, is now on my list - the Fake Microsoft Technician call came without a telephone number, but my Panasonic KX-TG4771 series phone allows me to "Block All Incoming Calls that Don't Have a Number" (for it to work you must have the Caller ID Feature on your Landline or IP type phone service)
