Will not fall for a scam

Some guy with an accent identified himself as Eric Jackson (come on, how many guys named Eric Jackson have an accent?).  He said he is with the "Department of legal affairs" and stated an "enforcement action" would soon be taken against my sister. Mr Jackson did not even know her current last name!  When I questioned him further he hung up. Mr Jackson is either a poorly-trained bill collector or a scam artist!  Do not fall for his tactics!

Scam artist would be a good  bet.  This sounds like the "pay so you do not get arrested" scam.

I received a call from the same number 909-440-6986.  Heavy accent.  They left a msg stating they were calling from the legal affairs department.  They encouraged me to call back or have my attorney call back and they ended the message with have a blessed day, god bless which I thought was odd.  I called the number back, they were only able to identify me by my phone number. They threatened to have me arrested for tax evasion, late paying and falsifying tax records.( I do not have any back taxes)   They read me some script and they asked if I had any questions.  When I asked where exactly am I  calling because this was not the number to legal affairs the guy said I'm not here to argue with you so be prepared to get arrested.  I told him you should be prepared to be arrested for scamming people.  Then he said F- you and hung up.  Red Flags: heavy accent, no actual information, etc.  These people need to be stopped.

I just received a call from that number. Guy with thick accent. He wanted to speak with my daughter who lives with us. I asked what he wanted and he said he could only discuss it with her. I went to get a pen and pad to write the number down  (he was going to give me a number for her to call) and when I went back to the phone he was no longer there.. I called the number on the caller ID and a recording said it was the Treasury Dept. Is this similar to what you received?

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Woman with foreign accept left voice message for my wife, identified herself as Annie Johnson of the Department of Legal Affairs. Oddly scripted message included "enforcement action has been taken on your name," instructed  her to "have a retained attorney call back or you will have a legal mess." Number given was 909-440-6986, the same as appeared on caller ID. Annie ended her message with "have a blessed day, and goodbye."

Most of these calls are coming from India or other foreign country's where we have no jurisdiction.  All we can hope for is that they catch up with them over there.  It does happen..

Today I received a message from Eric Jackson from the Department of legal affairs, requesting me to call ASAP to prevent enforcement of an action against me.  Much of what has been said about this call is the same as what has been said above.  The caller has a heavy accent (Mediterranean?).  He recommends that you call back with an attorney.  He calls numerous times in a short period of time just in case he really did miss you.  He threatens that you will be arrested if you don't comply. We immediately typed the number into the Google bar and this thread came up.  After reading it, we decided it would be safe to answer him.  On one of his successive calls, my wife stated he asked to speak with me, she told him I was not home.  She stated that he immediately tried to gain as much information about me through conversation as possible (she didn't give him any).  When she asked questions about the "charges", he told her he could not disclose any information to her.  She finally told him she was on to his "scam" and hung up.  He has not called back since this incident.

Yesterday, I received a message from Eric Jackson from the "Department of Legal Affairs", requesting me to call ASAP to prevent enforcement of an existing action against me.  None of this pertains to me.  Basically, the same as stated above: heavy accent , cheesy  message. I wonder how many people he has called?  Not very convincing, almost comical.

Got a call from a John with a heavy accent that said he was from the US Department of Legal Affairs and that there is a class action lawsuit against me. He said they have contacted me in writing several times and this is the final verbal notice and they will proceed with the lawsuit. He told me I needed to call 909-440-6986 and speak to Brian King and he will give me all the details. I asked him why I was calling a long distance number and his response was because they are out of California. I told him I will report this to my local authorities and he said ok see you in court than and hung up.

    Good for you!
    Glad you recognized the scam.

In any case ... if there were a REAL law suit against you, you would received appropriate documentation via registered snailmail.  Also, if a summons was issued, you would NOT get a warning about it ... it would be handed to you as a surprise.

Just got a call someone at 909-440-6986 who asked if I recv'd an enforcement notice blah blah blah and asked me to verify a bunch of personal information which I of course refused to give and I told him I knew what he was saying was not real, a scam.  He then said he would call the police and someone would be out to arrest me in a couple hours. I said "go for it" and he hung up.

Got a call from 909-440-6986.  The guy had an odd accent - thought it was French at first, but it wasn't.  I didn't pick up.  Here's the message that was left - poor English, pronounced legal as "liquor", total scam.

"This message is intended to concern [phone customer's name].    This John Spencer with Dept of legal [pronounced “liquor”] affairs I’ll try to reach you in regard to a very important issue.  This is ?  not education call for us, in regard to the enforcement action that has been started on your end.  My number is 909-440-6986, I repeat, 909-440-6986.

If for any reason you are busy to call back, I would suggest you to have your retain attorney to do it for you.  And ? in calling when I’ll do legal matter for you.

I hope you think this right and call me back.  This is John Spencer with Dept. of legal [pronounced “liquor”] affairs looking forward to speak to you.

Until then have a blessing and god bless."
