- Sherry Laughlin| 11 repliesFellow with a very heavy accent called, identified himself as Brandon Carter with the US Treasury Department of Legal Affairs (no such division), asked for the business owner, said she needed to call him ASAP on an emergency legal matter. It sounded fishy, so I checked to see if others had gotten calls. It is a scam.
- Caller: claimed to be US Treasury
- Katie replies to Sherry Laughlin| 1 replyI received a phone call from this number, I could not understand him. I asked him to send me some documentation in the mail and he said he would along with a warrant. My mother got on the phone also, when I asked him a warrant for what he hung up. He was also rude to my mother and me.
- Dave Begley replies to Sherry LaughlinI just got the same call. A message was left that my daughter, who hasn't lived here in a few years, was to call back.
- Me| 1 replyI recieved a call wanting my attorneys name and phone number. This being a man with a very heavy accent saying I was being investigated by the U.S. treasury department legal affairs. I was told I had a complaint filed against me. I had this message on my voice mail so I called. Be careful!
- Me replies to MeI forgot to say he also said he was with the IRS and told me to call them to verify my complaint against me, and hung up on me!
- CarolI got the same call with the same message.
- Tbrown replies to Sherry LaughlinJust got this same call. "Brandon" was looking for my husband. When I told him I knew a scam when I heard one he said "ok you think this is a scam, I will start legal proceedings and he will be arrested tomorrow." Ok, buddy.

- elBartoWhat a bunch of dweebs, posing as some Legal Affairs Department garbage. Heavy Indian accent, asking for my attorneys address so he can send paperwork. Related to a past IRS "judgement". So I play along until he tells me to F*off, and hangs up? Well that's no fun. And to top it off- he blocks MY phone number so I can't call him? boo. party-pooper.

- Mike L.Received call from (909) 589-1165 on Wed. Said he was from US Dept of Treasury. Threatened legal action if we did not pay $4,700 owed from an IRS tax audit in 2012. Transferred call to second person (both had heavy Indian accents). He said that we needed to pay or would file warrant for arrest. Told him if it is legitimate then send papers. Hung up on him - no call back yet. Scumbags!
- Caller: US Dept of Treasury
- Call type: Prank
- Cindy F.My first call was from the US Treasury Dept., said I owed 5.7K in back taxes. I played along - and then when he told me if I hung up, the police would be there to pick me up in a few minutes. Hmmmm, the police get involved with tax issues? I gave him a phony name, too - and he was still able to find "her" info (no SSN???), too funny. His name was Steve Martin, with a heavy accent! This week "Jennifer Lincoln" with a heavy accent left me a VM saying she was from Legal Affairs and told me or my attorney to call. She also wished me well at the end of the message. Friggin' idiots!
- Caller: Scammers
- I'mnodummyMy experience today was just like Cindy F. Same Jennifer Lincoln asking for our son who's never lived here. Jennifer had a heavy accent and said pretty much the same thing. I thought her wishing us well and good luck was a nice touch though. But it didn't win me over!!!
- Caller: Legal Affairs
- Mesa, AZJust recieved call from "Jennifer Linkon" and then transfered to an "officer Steve O conner" badge number 11030. He stated I owed $4750 from 2012. That a warrent was issued for my arrest. Heavy indian accents for both of them. The creepy part was he did seem to know things about me like my background. However, I think most of what he said could be in public records. So glad I looked up the number. I had a feeling it was a scam.
- Caller: "Dept of Legal Affairs" SCAM!
- John ParrReceived a call from this number stating something dept. treasury asking if I have received my CP503 notice and if I had retained a lawyer. I replied no and asked what that is and the person on the line with a heavy possibly filipino accent stated he would call me back.

- Lonnie Booth| 1 replyHad a message on my home phone to call back about a legal matter, called back and was told that I own $46000 for falsifying my 2012 tax statement, and if I didn't pay it there would be a warrant out for my arrest. Then proceed to read off 14 counts against me. When I told him I would talk to my attorney he hung up on me.

- AnonymousA family member received a threatening call from this number today, asking for my name, saying they were from the Department of Legal Affairs in California. According to her, they had a heavy Indian accent and were extremely rude. They said I owed taxes to the US Treasury and asked for my contact information. She could barely understand the person speaking, and asked to speak to a supervisor, who also had a heavy Indian accent. When she confronted him and told him she would not give them my contact info and if this was legitimate there would have been official mail, he said they had sent certified mail but it was returned. Then he said if I did not contact them there was a warrant out for my arrest. She asked who this was, and the person said "Shawn Adams" and gave some phony badge number (994608). "Shawn" gave her his phone number (909-589-1165) for me to call back. Googling the number led me to here. The number is a T-Mobile cell phone number. What a bunch of clowns.

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest. If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
