Asking for my wife and claims he is from department of legal affairs in us treasury.   Had Indian accent but said his name was Mike Torres.  

Received a call from someone stating they are from the Dept of Legal Affairs of the U. S. Treasury. Called this number back only to get a voice mail. Got a return call from someone who disguised his voice when I told him that I am recording the call and will be calling the police. At that point he said "go ahead, I don't care."

Called the house earlier with the usual legal threat message (they had called my cell previously from an number based in Buffalo).  Had time to kill so I have called back multiple times from different phones (outgoing number hidden) and used fake names and phone numbers (have given a radio station, a mixed up pizza place number, and the number for a federal courthouse.  Amazingly they have always been able to find "my file" and we parry back and forth for a while until they get frustrated and drop their "hammer" - there is a warrant out for my arrest and the police will be at my door shortly to bring me in.  Yet when I ask them, they are never able to tell me my address.  Hmmmmm....  maybe they aren't real after all (sarcasm filter off).

Just got a similar call and they threatened that the US Department of Treasury would be showing up at my door to arrest me and suggested I need to get an attorney. left an extension of 104 and a name of Ethan Smith.
The number is either busy or puts you to a voice mail.

You would think if I was in so much trouble they would just come get me......
This is a major scam.

Same type of call. Heavy Indian or Pakistani accent told me he was from the US Treasury office & was calling in regards to legal action being taken against me. Dud i not get a letter in the mail? Get my lawyer & call same # back, asking for Ethan Smith. I checked this # on the web & was led to this, showing same scam being pulled for months. Beware people. Don't ever give out personal info over the phone.

I might end up into a legal message for you. I hope you will check this-flight(?) and call me back. This is William Boyd with the Department of legal affairs.Looking forward to speak to you. Till then goodbye."

Got the same... What a joke!

I got a call from this same dude with an Indian accent saying his name is William White and that there is some serious legal action against me and that he's from the US Dept of Treasury, Legal Affairs.  He said they sent me 3 notices in the mail and I've received nothing.  He read to me the notice that was supposedly sent out and I told him I've resolved all prior issues I had with the IRS.  He hung up and that was that.  But what's the point of all this?  It certainly seems like a scam, but what is this guy gaining without asking for more info?  Did he ask any of you for more of your personal information?

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances- amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). SAME AS ABOVE. I AM A PROFESSIONAL AND WAS AN AGEN OF US TREASURY and they called me. I recorded it. I asked specific questions only an agent would know and this is a SCAM.   This is the same India call selling Microsoft computer problem scam earlier. I told them they are a scam. This is not a legitimate operation as I see it.

I received a call from Mike Torres (Inian accent) could barely understand him but he said he was from Legal Affairs at the U.S. Treasury and there has been an enforcement started against me to call him back at 909-666-5681. Just another scam.

Same than above, just got a call from a Mike Torres. When I hung up on him he called again leaving me with a long voice mail about US treasury legal matter and ask to call him back.... SCAM !!!!!

I got that exact guy calling just now. Big scam giveaway was his name "Mike Torres" with a heavy Indian accent. And a very vague message why he was calling.

Ditto all of the above. Said he was going to have me arrested. He actually knew my name, so guessing they bought names from a hacked online shopping account somewhere.

Got the same message from Mike Torres with the Indian accent. I was skeptical, but have property in that area code, so I called. Returned call came from Steven Smith with an Indian accent. Told him he had my name slightly wrong and that the government was NEVER wrong (sarc) so he was obviously a scammer. He got angry and hung up.
Since the Home Depot hacking, calls like this and the Nigerian emails have started.  Glad I cancelled my old credit card numbers.
Does everyone else have the "Home Depot" connections here?

Said they were from "The Legal Department of the US Treasury". They asked for me by name, so I listened for a moment longer than normal.  They wanted my attorney information, and said they were going to have me arrested. I knew it was a scam, but called the non-emergency line at the police department since I had the scammer's number. Wanted to share their response: There is not much that can be done legally, because the fraudsters mask their phone numbers. What is most helpful to share this information with friends and family: They are after you to give personal information, and/or to buy a cash card to give them in exchange for whatever excuse they can devise. They can buy your name from any number of companies, or steal it from various sources, so please don't think that makes it legit. Some popular scams include: Pretending to be the IRS and asking you to pay your balance; Windows/Apple virus on your computer they are trying to fix and need a password. Same as above, Mike Torres, but in the message he left he told me, " If you too busy to call back, I suggest you have you freaking attorney call for you." He said FREAKING! Laughed so hard! Totally a scam...
