- BradI recieved a voicemail from Investigator Winter Delaroche from legal mediation of Torre, Mathews & Associates. I was on my way to pay the money gram that they supposedly worked a payment plan for until decided to get online and research everything I could about them and Oasis Collections( which was on their letter head that they faxed me) in which they work with at 877-884-0311. When I asked her if there was any office that I could pay the debt in person, she told me to money gram the money to VPS (Vantage Point Services) which is another collection agency. and put #7031 on the money gram when I send it...I am still confused because they had my S.S.# and they said that they would take legal action by sending my case to the DA-District Attorney's office. I have been researching all day and am still unsure.

- hahaThey cant do anything to you, I just received a call from them as well. Sue them because it is against the law to protray yourself as a law enforcement person, when you are just collecting a debt, they must also advise you that they are trying to collect a debt before they even talk to you

- Howard Goodrow| 1 replyCalled and said they were criminal investigators and were calling to advise a William Brucker to contact them or an arrest warrent would ensue. I know no one ny this name. They said this telephone number was listed as his. I checked the internet and found these people are bill collectors posing as law enforcement. That is against the law. They gave their numbes as 913-586-0340 and the woman I spoke to was Bellion.
- Alfalfa replies to Howard GoodrowThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
•is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
•refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
•asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
•exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
•Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
•Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
•Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
•Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors - croThese idiots have been calling me for 3 years. when i call hem back all i get is a machine. the message i leave is always the same. " I have contacted my police department, and they are unaware of any criminal case invoving me in any way. please call me @ ------" It takes them about 6 mos. to rotate through their numbers and call me again.
- Elspeth replies to loriI hope you didn't pay - if they truly did own a debt that belonged to you, they would be legally required to send you proof of this. They refused, which tells me right away that they don't have any way to collect this debt because it's already been paid, or is bogus. If you couldn't find the company she claimed to be from, that is also another sign of a scammer.
They also cannot call pretending to be an attorney or a police officer - this is in violation of the FDCPA. If you come back to read to site, I hope you do learn your rights as a consumer - read about the FDCPA.
