caller id said Yonkers, NY - part of message heard - call an 800 number - debt collection agency

If you have Vonage phone service, they are calling to let you know that they where not able to process you monthly bill using the info on file.  My bank recently had to change my card number and I forget to give them the new number.  Just went online to my account payed the bill and updated my account, not really a big deal.

These people called me from this number. (914) 513 0163) The caller i.d said Yonkers N.Y.

I received a partial pre-recorded message from this company today. At the end of the recording they provided the following information:

I did a Google search on the address, and it came up as Portfolio Recovery Associates.

There are a LOT of reports about them being Fraudulent, and producing phony affidavits, etc.

HOW can companies like this be in existence???? I will be filing a complaint with the FTC and with the BBB about this!

I hope others will file reports as well! These types of fraudulent practices need to be stopped!

One of nearly 60 phone numbers this gang uses to harrass people, 914-513-0163 does belong to Portfolio Recovery Associates, out of Norfolk VA. They have "skip" technology to be able to make it look as if they are calling from all over the USA, but all calls originate in their sad little shop in Norfolk. They like to call with their caller ID masked, in order to be more likely to fool and intimidate their victims, but ever since I complained to the state office of consumer protection under our Attorney General, the calls have been coming - to our house - with the company name on the caller ID. These bottom feeders buy up debt that is so old it cannot be collected, and then set out to bully, intimidate and manipulate and deceive anybody they can, whether that person ever owned the debt or not, into paying them big bucks for something they "bought" for pennies. Without the Best Congress Money Can Buy, this kind of extortion scam would not be tolerated, but it was enabled late '80s, when the Congress decided to give the whole economy to the financial sector - banking,Wall Street, insurance, etc. Do not ever speak with these swine, as it only encourages them, and they are taught to bully and manipulate and intimidate over the phone. Do send them a certified letter/return receipt requested, asking for verification of the debt. They will throw the letter into the recycling bin unopened, and never return the receipt, but you will have your own copy of the letter you sent, plus the proof you sent it, and a record on the Postal Service's computer showing that it was received, and the date. It might be worth your time to keep a phone log of all their calls to your home. If they call your cell phone without your permission, you can sue them. Plenty of info re these vermin on the internet, including their fraudulent 1099-C's they issue to the IRS.

How they got his number is the puzzle. I did a test and never gave this number to anyone and is unlisted. They are using the Do Not Call list they have to subscribe to in an illegal manner to gather numbers. They never leave a name of who they are calling for. Last year, I filed an FTC complaint as they slipped up and gave a name, who was not me by the way. Scumbags at the worst. Report them to the FTC.

Portfolio Recovery try's to scam people out of money from old debts way past the time they can collect. They do not pay the bank, but keep the money them self. They hope you are not smart and will just give them money to make them stop calling.

They have about a hundred numbers to make it hard for you to block the calls. They only list a city name, and not the name of the company. Stay off the phone with these scam artists.

This company has many different numbers. I actually thought I had a bill with these people, only to find that I had nothing. But, they continue to harass me on my cell phone. Maybe I had a uncollected bill from the early 90's (during a divorce).  Nothing shows up.

They call my cell phone all the time. If they aren't allowed to call your cell phone then how do you get them to stop? They call everyday several times a day from different numbers. It seems as though many are complaining to the FTC but nothing is being done otherwise this would not be allowed to continue. Is there anything else we can do so they stop calling?? We paid this particular debt years ago and had to be part of the refinancing of our home that the payment went right to the debt collector and then we had to get all of the information cleared off of our credit report by producing the letters and payment to the credit bureaus and then a year or so after we had it all cleared and off of the credit reports these people pop up again with the same debt. Its fustrating because you get no where no matter what you do. Getting sickening.

I've never answered there call but thanks for letting me know who it is. I received the call on my cell, just had this number for approx 3 months. when I say no one, I mean nobody has this # except a select few. No businesses whatsoever, which leads me to believe the cell phone carrier is selling/ sharing our cell numbers although "they" say different.

I fell for the portfolio scam 4-1/2 yrs ago & they extorted thousands of dollars out of me because I am honest & was pregnant & just wanted to pay off my debt (even though I had already paid the credit card company twice what my original balance had been with them), but the more I paid them, the harder they harassed me... Ms. Ward (if that was even her real name) even suggested I refinance my house so that I could pay them off...  They are heartless, soulless drones who work there just to make commission and they convince themselves everyone they are collecting from are bad deadbeats so they can justify harassing & extorting their victims.  Like a previous person on here said... DO NOT TALK TO THEM... block their calls... if someone calls you from a number you don't recognize... borrow a landline somewhere & call that number if it's them, go to your phone & block their number.... don't try to reason with them, all they care about is stealing money from you & the more you speak with them, the more they will harass you.  This company is about lying and stealing... they don't care about anyone but making money for themselves... they even tried to sue me in court by giving my account to a debt lawyer, but I refuted their charges had saved some old letters & bills from the original debt & explained to the court how they harassed me, and they dropped the suit... they try going to court in hopes that you won't show or respond & then they get an automatic judgement against you.... EVERYONE & anyone that can complain about these collection companies should, and write your congress people and anyone you can think of complaining... it's not going to change otherwise... I can't even believe it's legal for them to treat us that way... but it is... thanks Reaganomics! and Republicans for allowing the financial sector to continually screw us over!

Got it too Its for an old cc I had 8 yrs ago long gone..tried to tell them I was reporting them for harassment and he just kept yelling in the phone. Need to send registered letter I got a new phone number 3 months ago and they are calling that one now.Been doing this for about 2 yrs. Someone is giving them my number.
Its FAR past the statute of 7 yrs for my state Not likely will they go to court..the cc bill was 2k they are saying 7k so yes they do inflate the info.

I know there are lawyers who have mass claims maybe that is the way to go.

I guess I will change my number again..
