WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Got a call from this # and when I called it back, "Dan" said we owed 2800.00 from and audit.(not too much that we wouldnt pay it today and avoid problems) We were freaking out. He got our cell # and stayed on the phone with us until we got to the bank. It was MLK day and bank was closed. He then wanted us to go to ATM and pull it out. This guy is good!! He keeps you just busy enough to not think it thru. And has an answer if you ask a question. While my husband was detained on the cell phone which he was not allowed to hang up, I called the CPA. Thank God the bank was closed and we cannot pull out more than 400.00. In our panic to keep from being told our assets would be seized and bank accounts closed, we almost fell for it. Note to others: hang up and call a direct IRS #.

Received call on cell phone and said he was from the IRS and that he had legal notice to call.  He said he wanted my home phone number and I said that he had called my cell phone.  He then asked for the last 4 digits of my social secuirty number and I again told him that I do not give out information over the phone - that if he had documentation that he could mail it or message it to me.   He got upset with me and said that a higher up would be getting in touch with me.   I began to tell him to take my phone number off of my list and that I was going to report him - he hung up

I just returned a phone call from a message left on me cell stating they were from the IRS, Daniel White's Tax audit division and to return the call immediately with a statement telling me not to ignore the call.  When I called back 917-267-8592, I was told that they audited my taxes between the years 2008-2012 and they believe I purposefully misrepresented my taxes and now owe $2868.  They said they have turned it over to the court and I would need to fly to New York with my attorney to defend myself or they were going to take all my possessions, attach my wages etc.   This is definitely a scam .... beware!!!

Just got a call on my answering machine from these idiots. A woman's pre-recorded monotone voice said something about calling Dan something (it was a bit muffled) and gave a badge number and this telephone number from which they'd called. They said something about being from the IRS and that I should call this Dan to prevent legal action or something to that effect. She repeated the number and hung up. Knew it sounded like a scam. What dirtbags.

Call on my cell phone advising that the second I finished listening to the robo call I should contact Dan White with the IRS to avoid prosecution.  Don't fall for this.  Complete scam.  IRS doesn't call, they send letters.

Just got that same exact call as Carla from Danial White. Scared me to death until I could wrap my head around the situation. The things they were saying didn't add up to logically making sense when it comes to dealing with the IRS. Becareful, they do come across as legit and have good scare tactics.

I have gotten 3 calls from this number, with the same monotone woman's voice, telling me to call Daniel White the "instant I listen to this message".  I don't answer numbers I don't recognize, so they've left message each time.  I won't be calling back, definitely a scam.

I received two messages in my voice mail claiming to be from the IRS. He repeated this claim. I was told to call 917-267-8592 the second I receive the message and ask for agent Daniel White. The caller also said i needed to call soon to avoid legal allegations. I have no reason to think I did anything wrong, figured this was a scam and never returned the calls.
