- Tax Scam| 1 replyReceived a call from 917-809-4720. Claimed to be a part of lawsuit for owed taxes. Called them back from a secure line. When they answered I told them the call was being monitored and recorded and I was returning their pre-recorded call. They hung up.
- Alicia replies to Tax ScamJust got that phone call as well. When I returned the call they would hang up. Few minutes later tried calling again and the number is disconnected
- Scam?| 1 replyReceived two partial messages today that said I needed to return call because something was being turned over to the county courthouse. Don't even live in NY. Tried to call back and got a fast busy.
- SCAM!!!Just received this call today two times. Both times they left a message about turning it over to the county court house. Both were partial messages. I called back and busy signal. Then I called again and it said I didn't dial the number correctly. It's all a scam. [***].

- BEWARE!Just received a recorded message from this number. Called back first time and got a disconnected message. Called back again and got an Indian male saying he was "Jack" So and So a "law officer" from the IRS. When asked, I repeated my phone number so he could "look up my file" but he couldn't seem to understand what I was telling him. I then launched into attack asking him where he was located specifically (he mumbled a "town" then "NY"), why he was calling and who he was looking for. He repeated he was from the IRS, told me to go on their website and look up his officer number. He started to give me said number but when I told him "hold on I need a pencil", he hung up.
- Caller: IRS
- CWG40 replies to Scam?Do not return the calls. Most likely Indian or Pakistani scammer/extortionists. They become very abusive when they find their scams are not working.
- Scam gets more sophisticatedAlong with the call from the said number, 917-809-4720, we also started to receive calls from the number coming through as 1-800-829-1040, that has a called ID as United Sates Government. This is actually a legit IRS phone number, but we believe the fraudsters are managing to impersonate the IRS caller ID. If you'll search the web for this 800 number you'll see references that this number is also used in the phone scam.
- Cheryl| 1 replyI received a phone message from 917-809-4720, claiming I had a lawsuit against me and they were going to notify the local county courthouse and I needed to respond immediately. It was an automated message was using incomplete sentences. I assume it is a scam of some sort (local courthouse with an area code that does not coincide with our community) and will be notifying my local county courthouse tomorrow on their behalf.
- BigA replies to CherylThis is a common ploy by criminals attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, etc. all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
