I got a call from these guys, they said a donation would help the Wyoming state patrol. When i said i would pay with card the guy told me he would send me to the credit card processor. Pretty sure he handed the phone to the guy next to him, Thats when i told them i wouldn't pay with card only check or money order. They had me promise 3 times that i would pay $75 via check when they send me a sticker and information in the mail. Beginning sounded real, the end sounded like a scam. I hope it was real, the highway patrol does so much for us, but in my gut i feel like it was a scam!

This is one reason why people don't like your organization :

Let It Ring: When the phone rings and a dubious charity asks for money, you can thank free-speech lawyer Errol Copilevitz for the call

    scrolling down to this :

    Shutting regulators down

As telemarketing calls multiplied exponentially over the next decade, Copilevitz's firm worked to make sure the calling continued unfettered.

In 1994, he knocked down a Georgia law designed to stop charities from using a law enforcement agency's name, without permission, to drum up donations.

Three years later, Copilevitz stopped Louisiana from limiting how many police organizations could solicit in the state.

Copilevitz won both cases on behalf of the American Association of State Troopers, which went on to raise tens of millions of dollars.

In the past eight years alone, the association has raised nearly $45 million through professional solicitation companies, IRS records show. About $36 million of that went straight to the solicitors, placing the charity at No. 9 on the Times/CIR list of America's worst.

You've given them more than $1 Billion. They've given almost nothing to the needy.

    Telemarketers turn charity into profits

    No laws enforce standards

The state list of police groups using telemarketing shows about 20 law enforcement associations currently registered to conduct telephone solicitations. They have hired telemarketing firms headquartered both in Texas and across the U.S. Several of those firms did not return phone calls.

    ...

Donations to the associations — such as the American Association of State Troopers and the Texas State Troopers Association — are not tax-deductible as a charitable expense.

    ...

The American Association of State Troopers in Tallahassee, Fla., which solicits over-the-phone donations in 20 states including Texas, recently received an F from the American Institute of Philanthropy, which evaluates charities nationally. The troopers association reported to the Internal Revenue Service in 2009 that it had a total revenue of $5 million but spent $3.9 million — 78 cents of every dollar raised — on fundraising expenses.

Executive Director Ken Howes said members pay $30 a year in annual dues, but that it doesn't cover the organization's expenses. Howes said the organization receives 17 to 20 cents for each dollar telemarketers raise.

"That surprised me when I got here and started getting into this job, but to be quite honest with you, they bear all the expenses of a campaign," he said.

    ...

Of the estimated $5 million it raised last year, the American Association of Troopers donated $1,000 each to 10 families of troopers killed on the job. Howes said the association has awarded nearly $2.2 million in scholarships to troopers' children since 1990.
