Today I received a call from a private number. I was driving and my handsfree wasnt connected, so I didnt pick the call. The caller left a VM. The caller identified herself as Illinois state Police officer and mentioned that there was a criminal fraud case. The content of the VM was almost exactly same as specified by "Satark" in http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/federal-crime-invesitgation-department-c409666.html?page=3

I was asked to call a number 919 229 4173. The person the other side identified himself some John Edward and he threatened me that, I will be arrested if I dont pay up 930$ immediately for some Tax filing miscalculations done for tax year 2010 and 2011. I asked him if he was from IRS. He mentioned that he was from Federal Crime Department. I told that I will have to take to my attorney to verify he was genuine. He mentioned that, if I hang up the call then everything will be over and I will have to appear in a court in Washington DC. I mentioned, I will talk to my attorney and if needed will see him in court. I was also browsing about the above shared link. He was furious and I hung up.

I know this is scam. But should be I filing a complaint with cops? If he calls back, what should I do? Please help.

I pretty much had the same experience as the previous comment. Unfortunately for the caller, they are now being investigated for abusing the phone systems for illegal purposes and posing as law enforcement. The call is fraudulent and at no time should anyone return the call or engage in conversation. Report the call to the phone company and your local authorities. Also you may want to contact the BBB and the Bureau of consumer protection!

BBB is useless, entertaining to read , but useless.  They have no authority what so ever, kind of like these fake IRS agents.  The only power they have is what you give them when you give them your name.

I just got a call from the same number today. 919-229-4173. They said they same thing, that I owe an internet loan and I must pay $756.23. They said if I don't they will call the police and I will be arrested in 2 hours. The scariest thing is that they know where I work, they know, my occupation, my medical license number, the name of my bank. They also said they know my social security number. How do I proceed? This is scary!!!!!!

They purchased your info. You probably applied to a website for a loan or something. Your caller is a FRAUD!
Debt is a civil matter. NEVER criminal, regardless of the debt type. You can NOT be arrested! Your caller making that threat is proof positive that he's nothing but a powerless scammer.
Put alerts on all your accts. & with the credit reporting agencies. Google the FDCPA. Know your rights! If you take another call from the fraud, tell him you know your rights & that unless you're provided with a notice of validation by mail (NOT e-mail or fax.) he's wasting his time. Let your employer or HR dept. know that you're being targeted by a fraud. It's becoming very common. Most employers & HR depts. are already aware of the problem. Talk to your friends & family about the issue. The more people that become aware of these scams, the less often people will fall for them.
Call blockers & apps. are useful tools. Landlines can utilize Call blockers (check Amazon) & Smart phones can as well. I use Mr. Number on mine. Call Control has also worked well for me.
    Be Safe. Be Aware.

I had received a call today that came from 911 as a missed call on my phone. It was a guy that left a voicemail stating he was sending state police out to arrest me because of a federal case against me. He said his name was Deputy Jason Anderson and that I should call as for officer washington. I have had this same scam before call me about two months ago. I put my number on the do not call list, I was told that should stop them from calling me. It seems that did not stop it though however. I am not going to respond to the call, but would like the calls to stop all together. I would like to know what the next step should be so that I can again make a complaint. If my number is on the do not call list, why are they still callig?

I received a voice message stating that he was from California state police. Message said I have a fraud complaint against me, and I need to report to nearest county police station, otherwise they will dispatch an officer to arrest me. Message asked me to call 919-229-4173 and talk to Sheriff  Patrick.

Both me and my wife received a call on different days saying that it is Connecticut Police department and Federal Crime Investigation and they are investigating a fraud committed by us. These guys are fraud. They can barely speak or read their script..the best way to handle them is to ignore.

I got a message that there was a miscalculation in the tax number and that if I don't pay up 900 dollars they will arrest me.
I ended up paying because I was too scared of the situation.
But here are the clues that will help people determine that they are fraud.
    1. They will be very aggressive in the beginning but once they know that you are ready to pay they will try to be nice to you.
    2. They will ask you the zip code of location where you are at the time of call and then will tell you the addresses of local pharmacies in your area
    3. They will insist on buying green dot money back dots and will ask you to scratch the code. IRS never accept any payment like this

Ask them specific question so that you know they are fraud

    1. Ask them what exactly is the miscalculation in tax. They will not have answers
    2. Ask them how much is the income in tax return they have. They will not know because they are fraud
    3. Pick a year when you were not in US and ask them if there is any penalty for that year. They will tell you a number for that as well which proves that they are cheats.

They are targeting new immigrants who are not aware of their rights. I have seen that they are targeting a lot of new Indian Migrants.

Also I somehow got a sense that even the callers were from India who were trying to fake their accents.

An Indian trying to con another Indian in USA. This is pathetic

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Same story for me. The mental trauma I and my wife underwent was too much. They are playing with lives and health of people. These people should be prosecuted and charged for swindling and causing mental trauma. They are getting curses from all the people they have troubled. These people are going to have a very bad life in future. I am religious person and they are targeting innocent people and causing a turmoil in their life

My cell never rang but a message appeared and it was showing 911 as the caller.  It was an Indian speaking jerk who said his name was Deputy James Anderson calling from the Michigan State Police and they were sending cops to my employer to arrest me immediatly for fraud.  I needed to call Officer Jason Washington from the Federal Crime Department back immediately at 919.229.4173 or God knows what will happen to me.

Total Scam and they don't arrest you for debt.

Ignore them.  Total scam.   For some reason the Indian scammer/extortionists love the name "spencer."  Maybe they like the character "Spenser" in the novels of Robert B. Parker.  Makes 'em feel like tuff guys.   HAHA.  An Indian tuff guy!  With a sing-song Bangli or Punjabi or Urdu voice.  Right.

I received the same call today and several other days where the caller stated he was from the Federal Crime Unit and had been assigned a case for Cash Advance against me for some pay day loan. He said his name was officer Washington. THe case he claimed was being filed in NC and like soooo many others on this web site got angry when I mentioned getting an attorney and hung up on me. I admit it really shook me up at first because I have gotten a pay day loan over six years ago and have not been able to pay it back. But its not normal business practices of pay loan companies to prosecute their customers unless actual fraud is committed. They just want the money back... Which after this call I am going to contact that company and make payment arrangements just to clear it out. Don't ever volunteer to pay something over the phone!

I recieved a VM on my phone that showed the number as #911.  The caller stated that she was a Deputy Sherriff (Sammy Marshall) with the St Louis Criminal Investigation Depart.  A complaint against me by the Federal Crime Department & for me to call #919-229-4173 & speak with a Randy Smith. Otherwise they will send an officer to my place of employment with an arrest warrent. If I failed to reply to this message, then God Bless me and Good Luck.
I deleted & blocked the call, I doubt that blocking will help since the number showed up as 911.
