Just received a phone call this afternoon.  A man left a message saying he was Roy Jackson from the Department of Legal Affairs and to call 949-800-7609.  We did not call them back.

We got a call for our daughter from a Roy Jackson, saying to call back about an important legal matter, as this was "The Dept. of Legal Affairs."  (Of what company or agency, he did not say)  There was an accent, and I could not understand some of the message.  I called back, but there was no answer, just a message from someone with another name.  However, within two minutes, I had a call back, but by then I had read this post, and I did not answer the phone, and I don't plan to.

Received two messages today from "Daniel Baxter" who said he was with "The Department of Legal Affairs", indicating that it involved "legal action" and that we should "consult an attorney" (of course, most people won't do this).

Lol)  Said to call back or have my attorney call back. Then called (and hung up) several more times days later. The caller ID said Irvine California.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances- amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

I too got a call from this number from a Roy Jackson. He said call Brian King at the number you all listed. I called and said I never paid my taxes for 2010 and enforcement was to follow. When asked why the IRS wasn't calling, he hung up. I called back, called him out on his foreign scam and he yelled at me in god aweful language and hung up again.

My wife also received a call from "Daniel Baxter" with the "Department of Legal Affairs," asking us to return his call at 949-800-7609 and/or get an attorney. (We did not speak with the caller; rather, he called our home phone and left a poor-quality voice message.) The caller did not speak with an accent. We did not return the call.

•You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

I just got this call and was informed that I was to be arrested tomorrow.  I apparently need to call Brian King at 949.800.7609.  I have to admit that I'm curious how they continue the scam.  Does the same - heavily accented - caller pick up when you call that number?!  What possible offense could they cook up?!

Just received a call from 1-949-800-7609 from Steve Madam, very heavy accent. Calling me from the dept of legal affairs claiming "enforcement taxes". Called back and a recording comes out to please leave a message.  Just hung up. I don't owe any taxes and I know the IRS or any State Agency doesn't call you like this if you owe taxes. What a scam!

Roy Jackson from the US Department of Legal Affairs - Treasury Department left a message.  He asked for a call back to 949-800-7609.  His message insisted I should do the right thing and take immediate action to resolve this legal matter.  He requested a call back from either me or my attorney.  Maybe my attorney should handle this one.  Complete scam.
