- Robert Christensen| 1 reply951-468-5174 told me they were from the State Attorneys Office in California, and were very vile and harrassing. Never told me why they were callling, just kept threatening to send the sheriff to arrest me and called me all sorts of names. I told them where to go (And it was NOT heaven, and hung up the phone. Who are these people? Do they really think I'm stupid enough to believe them?

- jmax replies to Carolyn GlennThese people have called my cellphone and work number several times today harassing me. First of all, the guy did not speak good english so I could not understand a word that he was saying. He kept asking me personal information that no one should give out over the phone. I told him that if he called me again that I was going to call the police. He called back being smart saying "just call the police". I do not who these people are, but they need to be investigated.
- Richard ArrigoniThey have been calling my house number all day saying charged have been filed against my name. How do i make this stop!
- CindyGot a call today at my place of work from a man that gave me this number to call and speak to a Curtis Jackson regarding charges filed by the State Attorneys office against me. When I called the number another man rattled of 3 charges that he said were being filed against me. "theft, check fraud, and violation of federal regulations". Neither of the men spoke very clear english and I had a very difficult time understanding him, which made him very irritated with me. They were both extremely rude, kept threatening me and asking me for personal information as well as money to "settle this debt." When I told him that there was no way I'm going to send anyone money for a debt I didn't owe, he said "ok, thats fine. I will be sending the Sherriff to your place of bussiness within an hour to arrest you. Make sure you tell the Sherriff that you spoke to Curtis Jackson and are not willing to settle this matter. You will need an attorney and are going to spend 9 months in jail." And hung up on me. The only thing that made me nervous is he did have some of my info; my name, social security number, name of my employer, my work phone number and email address.

- Furious| 1 replySame story as Cindy's ... only worse. I answer the phones at my office and knew immediately this "Jeff Anderson" was a scam as soon as he said he was from the state atty office and wanted to talk to my supervisor. I asked him politely if he knew how many laws he was violating calling me at work. He got rather irked and demanded I let him talk to my supervisor. When I refused he got angrier, literally yelling at me to get my supervisor. I just hung up. He called back, I hung up. He called back again and I hung up again – an easy 15 to 20 times. Then EVERY SINGLE LINE on my office system lit up! Tell me again how he's from the State Atty Office? Said he was going to keep calling me until I called his supervisor, Curtis Jackson at this number.
Since I was at work, I quickly called my husband to see if he could find out what this was all about. Evidently he was a little less polite than I had been. I get another call from this "Jeff" asking me who this man was that called and abused his supervisor and who gave him the right to do that?!? I told him it was probably my husband and the man says "Give me his number so I can call that bast**d! If he can give abuse he can take it!"
State Atty Office? Riiiiight.
Unfortunately he kept calling - and if it had been my phone I’d just let him have fun talking to my voicemail. But since this was my job, I told him I'd call this Curtis guy, who answered the phone "California State Atty General Office, Atty Curtis Jackson speaking." So how many laws did he violate in that one sentence?
Same story as Cindy's - same "charges" filed against me. He asked "You aren't aware of these charges? The sheriff didn't contact you last week?" Nope, must have missed that visit. He said the sheriff would be at my office to pick me up, I said OK and he hung up. Essentially I bit my tongue until it bled, let him go through his speach and just acted like it was no big deal. Trust me, it would have been more grafying to let him know what I really thought of him.
So far, no more calls. Maybe he figured their scam wasn't going to scare me and they've moved on to some other poor soul. The problem is they know they can't be touched. They're not in California, they're not even in the country, so they don't care. That's the part that makes me furious - not that they tried to scam me, but they that they can get away with it and someone kinder and more trusting than I, will be victimized by them.
Already filed a report with the REAL Atty Gen office - it's easy to do online and it's the only way we have of fighting back and hopefully stopping them before they frighten some poor old lady out of her social security checks.- Caller: "State Atty General Office"
- mjw replies to Carolyn Glenn| 1 replyThey also called me I called the police the police it was a scam so I called them back and told them I made a report and they were offering all kinds of money for me to drop the charge and makes me feel good that I did not accept because who knows how many people have fall in for it these people do need to be investigated spread the word

- Alfalfa replies to lindaThis is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:
