Caller did not identify he's from Microsoft.  They just got a message from my Windows that my PC has a problem.  He gets annoyed when I said I don't use a computer at all.  He blurbed out my name which matches what I had in the telephone directory.  If he calls again, I'll tell him I use an IBM z/OS or Linux at home.

I also got a call from this number, but I didn't give them a chance to say who they were.  They asked for someone else, who does not live here and I said they had the wrong number, they kept insisting they did NOT have the wrong number and they repeated what our number is.  I did not confirm they had our number but said again that person does not live here and hung up.  I'm sorry now I didn't try to get more info, because if this is for sure the Microsoft rip off people, I would have LOVED to have had some fun with them for a bit, considering they ripped my poor 79 year old mother off for $500 because they had her so scared her computer was ready to die.  Funny though, when I dial the number that showed up on called ID, it says the number has been disconnected.

He insisted he needed to fix something on our nonexistent computer. My wife had a little fun with him and he finally hung up.

If you have a land line, look into getting a call blocking device. They run around 60 and can block up to 1500 numbers. It would pay for itself. If you have a cell phone, some of those you can find free blocking apps for.

The family connected to the number has NO connection to the scam. It was a phone number they have not used in over 10 years and someone is using it illegally.

These guys are scam artists so beware. They want access to your computer. One older fellow in Edmonton has reportedly been scammed thousands of dollars.

Called before 8 a.m. yesterdday and 8:45 and 9:15 this morning. Didn't answer. There is always a V0527175416004 before the number. Next time I'll grab the phone and have some fun with whoever it is. Will have to come up with something creative....

I usually tell people I do not deal with any requests by phone

I am in Canada and I also got a call this morning from 1-985-631-6982, the caller ID says station 113. It was a man who said there was a problem with my windows and he needed me to turn on my computer so he could fix it...also said he had my licence number. I told him I didn't know what scam he was pulling but I was not buying into it, and hung up.

Sometimes the caller claimed to be from Windows and sometimes from computer repair.  I'll speculate that my name and number were obtained from the telephone directory.  They would not stop the daily calls so I added the number to my list of blocked callers.  The outfit still calls but my telephone system just disconnects them.

The caller is the all-to-common Windows support scammer. If you do answer the phone, please use whatever means to keep them on the line for as long as you possibly can, but do NOT make any changes to your computer, do NOT visit any websites whatsoever, do NOT download anything, and do NOT install anything. While he's dealing with you, the caller cannot scam someone else and this is the most effective way we can fight back. The scammer is trying to get you to the point where you use the "Run..." menu item or to launch your web browser, but you can make this a long and brutally painful effort and ultimately never do either of those steps. Remember, you're playacting a very naive Windows user who's slow to understand, doesn't reliably describe what you're seeing on your screen, but really wants help to solve this terrible problem you've been told about. You can deny the very existence of menu items to place stumbling blocks in the scammer's way or otherwise mislead them as to what items and programs are available or what you're seeing. Knocking him off his script slows him right down. Gradually increase the scammer's stress level, but if he sounds like he's going to crack, bring him back down just a bit with expressions of appreciation or apologies for not understanding his instructions. Never let on that you know he's a scammer, not even by the end of the call. Stretch it out for as long as you can. Eventually he won't be able to take it anymore and he'll hang up on you, although be prepared for a possible explosion of anger or verbal abuse immediately prior (it seems some scammers feel cheated if they can't cheat you). I've done this a number of times very successfully and will continue to do so. It can be very entertaining, but always rewarding to know I've put a dent in their day's productivity and possibly saved someone just like my own mother from losing her money to these criminals.
