How To File a Complaint with FTC

1-800-669-6654 - Received a message stating that it was from Countrywide - the beginning of the message was cut off on my answering machine and due to the fact that we have had a loan with them in the past, I followed the prompts as directed and entered my husband's social and our area code.  A gentleman (with some sort of accent) then picked up the phone and kept saying "hello, hello". . . . "hello, hello" and then he hung up.  WHAT AN IDIOT I AM!  Hopefully nothing will come of this but in this day and time with identity theft, I have to admit, I'm worried!

The link to FTC's Online Complaint Form,  https://www.donotcall.gov/Complain/ComplainCheck.aspx does not work.

Click on it and you get a green and white screen saying "Sorry, we're having online difficulties."

What good is call trace?!   I get getting anonymous calls from a telemarketer who is asking for credit card information.  They block the caller ID and they hang up if I ask for the company name or phone number.  I am on the national and state Do Not Call Lists.  I can activate Call Trace through AT&T (at a cost to me of $7.99), though they will only release the phone information to a law enforcement agency.  The FTC, Texas Public Utilities Commission, and my local police department refuse to get involved so it is impossible to report them.  Any ideas?

Possibly the FTC is to blame. After all, if we include our phone numbers, then someone there has access to them. Now, I'm not saying that an employee of the gov. would ever do anything immoral, illegal or violate the privacy rights of citizens.

But when you do look at who's supposed to be "in charge" of the government, it may make you think about it.

I was considering signing up to the Do Not Call thingy, but sounds like it's a waste of time, these callers already have me so miffed wasting my time throughout the day that I don't want to give them anymore time, effort or energy, emotions etc.  I plan on being rude and answering every call everytime.......I currently have 6 numbers calling me throughout the day, I run an inhome daycare so it's very disrupting especially at nap time...seems like this is one of those things that drive us all crazy and will take way to much time to get anything done about...hmmm should I be a squeaky wheel??? pondering, more important things to burn energy on, no I'll just be miserable back to them, the most recent caller from Nevada seems to be returning to somewhere with a messed up answering machine, I'll call them randomly throughout the day all day everyday and give them a dose of their own medicine...squeak squeak.

So you can sue if they continue to call you..big deal! Who has the cash to take them to court? Of course, you will also have to supple the dates, times etc they called and a 'recording' to back your claims.

the best thing that i have found to weed out these callers is called Phone Tray Free, it only allows calls that you want to come through, is very configurable and works better than any pay program i have tried.  I am using it for my mom and dads phone as they are older and i don't want them to get sucked into anything, it seems to be working very well, the only drawback is that the phone line has to be connected through the computer then you turn the ringer off on your phone and the Phone Tray Free rings through the computers speakers, putting it on an old desktop and that is that desktops sole function is to monitor the calls, it keeps a record of the numbers, dates, and times the calls are made and what the system does with them!!!  very good product for free i have to say!!!

This 212-448-5501 is a problem.  We have a little newborn and the constant calling is a nightmare.

There should be a way to get these scams and business to stop calling? Do they really think that you will give them information? Can't we do something as citizens to ban telemarketing all together?

This is getting too much: distracting, annoying, even disturbing and all unwanted calls. No matter how "insignificant" this issue might sound to some or how some others deliberately paint this issue as such, this is NOT a problem of annoyance only. Ability to place unidentifiable calls is used widely not only by "innocent" marketers, but for criminal purposes, which makes the little benefit of it actually unimportant, and which has to give the Government legitimate grounds for taking appropriate centralized measures to protect individual and public safety. Existing laws has to be corrected and/or new law(s) have to be introduced for this matter, equal to individuals, companies and organizations, with possible rare exceptions for law enforcement and government only and only under special circumstances.

Here are some ideas:

- ALL calls have to be identifiable. Caller ID and Name (Company Name) have to be displayed (real, legally obtained, listed, and that could be tracked back). Calls from public phones/booths have to display appropriate IDs/numbers.

- Technology has to adapt to satisfy mandatory identification. (E.g.: existing devices that currently enable ID suppression have to be rendered unable to place calls without positive identification; an attempt to use such device and/or method has to be tracked and recorded at a service provider level; etc.)

- Any attempt to fake an ID/Name, use someone else’s ID/Name, illegally obtain and use right to hide Caller ID and Name has to be deemed as a punishable offense.

If a person, company or organization is legal and honest there should be no reason to hide their identity. By keeping themselves “private” they are actually violating other’s peace and privacy. (E.g., one can not drive a car without a valid license plate, or enter a plane without a valid passport/ID, etc. Calling without a Caller ID and name has to be viewed as knocking someone’s door with a full face cover mask and costume on.)

Regards,

NKS

Great suggestions!  I'll sign that petition for the legislature whenever you want to send it!
hi NKS
I'd also like to add..the 800 888 and all those other telemarket prefixes get our info.. when we call them...so why shouldn't we also have their name number and business?

I am so sick of my caller id, which i pay for...to come up...unknown name, unknown number...

That isn't caller id.. that is a sham!

Not all telemarketers are scammers. There are a lot of honest men and women who make a living working at call centers.

If you do not want what they are offering, kindly refuse and hang up.  They will get the point that you are not interested.
