Police Warn Cell Users of Phishing Scam

28 Jul 2008

Police are putting out a warning about a phishing scam targeting thousands of cell phone customers.

A computer-generated call claims it represents a local bank to get personal account information.

Police said thousands of people heard this same message:   "Hello. This is a message from Stone City Bank. Suspended to your debit card for security reasons. You can activate your card by calling our toll-free number."

"When they call the 800 number, they're asking for bank account numbers, personal information, things like that,"  Bedford Police Major Brian Turpen said.

But those phone calls didn't come from Stone City Bank at all.  Bank representatives say they never share personal account information and never do business or ask for account numbers through an automated message on a cell phone.

The calls, police say, are fraudulent. Victims should call their bank to check for suspicious activity. For others who get the call, police advise never respond to a request for account information.

I just answered 866-647-9734.  A lady began talking and advised that they were sending me supplies to do a campaign to raise money for Cancer.  I
finally had to butt in and said I am not able to do this at this time.  I
have been in charge of every charitable campaign in my life.  I am now retired and do not wish to spend my time doing this.  I hope they got the message!!

Apparently Canadians also need to be informed about scams/fraud:

Some Canadians also think Americans are stupid, hence why they did this:
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2008/07/08/6098111-ap.html

July 8, 2008 "A Canadian woman has pleaded guilty in New Hampshire to defrauding elderly Americans in an international telemarketing scheme.  Joyce Goodlin of Montreal was one of 15 Canadians indicted in 2002."

And this:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/ ... ernational/home

August 1, 2008 "Two Canadians each face up to 10 years in federal prison after admitting their participation in a telemarketing scam authorities say raked in nearly $10.5 million from some 37,000 American consumers."

I checked the front page of CBC to see how wonderful Canada is, but unfortunately the first story on the page was this:
"Tuesday, August 12, 2008 Calls for public inquiry into Montreal shooting death...
Villanueva was shot by police Saturday night after he and a group of friends were involved in an alleged altercation with officers.

Police stated they resorted to using their guns because they felt threatened by the large group of young people.

A protest held in the neighbourhood the following day descended into mayhem, with dozens of city blocks burning after people torched cars and garbage cans. Police officers and ambulance workers were attacked, and rioters looted stores.

Police kept a close watch on the impoverished neighbourhood Monday night with dozens of marked and unmarked police cars circling the streets.

Except for a few trash-can fires and rock-throwing, the area remained quiet."

Stay Safe!

Thanks for spending so much of your obviously vast free time to show how bad of a country Canada is.

A Canadian was making repetitve posts on this story about how stupid Americans are for falling for scams, as well as a few other bigoted remarks about Americans in general.  800 notes removed his posts and others' posts who were arguing for or against him.  I was trying to show him some reality.  Unfortunately, 800 Notes didn't delete my post with the others, hence why it's out of context.  I don't think Canada is a bad country, but it has it's problems like any other country does.

Imho, it is not countries that are bad or good, its the people. Every country has good people just as assuredly that they have bad ones.

What is being done by the authorities to catch and convict these people, sorry THINGS trying to steal from us. "JUST HANG UP THE NEXT TIME." the police tell us after we call them to notify them of a confidence scam and file a complaint. They seem to be telling us what to do so that we are satisfied, but the calls keep coming. they take your complaint. Tell you to hang up. and hope you won't call them back later.
you still end up with the telphone ringing off the wall though.

from personal experience and wasted time and by very helpful visits to sites like this one and 800notes.com and whocallsme.com and callferret.com i can give you a list of scam call numbers ... i've saved them in my phone as 'scam 1' , etc. so i can just punch in 'ignore' instead of wasting time answering the phone when they call again ... and they do. they all do. ... and they bypass the 'do not call' list rules by saying 'this is not a sales call' at the beginning of their spiel ... IGNORE THESE PHONE NUMBERS:

386-756-9530
202-683-1404
231-732-2630
408-651-8118

Telemarketing calls became such a problem that I simply, disconnect my phone or silence the ringers. If the call is not on my list of acceptable calls, the phone rings silently for ever. I'm on the do not call list, but it doesn't help. I have noticed that the number of calls coming in has been reduced by 95% as a result of turning off the ringers. I also have a pager for my acceptable list.

You may want to put the number 407-957-5956 down on your list as well.  This is actually a routing number being used by scam artists overseas.  They call saying you have 8,000 or 10,000 in Credit card debt and that they can help you reduce the payoff.  When I informed the gentleman that I have not had a Credit card for over 30 years and that was paid off, he then stumbled and stated it was for medical bills, I then immediately fringed shock and told him I need to call my insurance company as they had already paid all of those in full and that the medical people were trying to get double paid, and that he needs to report them to his supervisor, etc etc....he hung up and no one has called me back, but thought it worth the time to report it to others.
