Watch Out For Telemarketer Claiming To Raise Money For North High School in IA

2 Apr 2008

Police say a company is running a telemarketing scam. The telemarketer called at least one person in  Sioux City, IA claiming to be raising money for North High's athletics. They're not. In fact, North High officials told police that the school hasn't asked anyone to solicit money for the athletics program.

The name of the telemarketer that appears in the called ID is "All-American Pro". The number displayed doesn't belong to them. Rather, it belongs to a legitimate business in Boise, Idaho.

If you get a call from "All-American Pro", don't contribute any money.

Your advice should be to NEVER give money to a "charity" that telemarkets at all.
a) Don't encourage a nuisance.
b) Since they're pretty much all crooked, it's the only safe policy.

I have donated to the American Lung Association this year but continue to receive calls that show on my caller ID as the American Lung Association and feel the frequency of those call amount to harrassment.  How do I stop them?  I am registered on the Do Not Call Registry but know charities and Political Parties are exempt.

EVERY(including all organizations that are exempt) calling party must have an internal Do Not Call list. When they call again ask them to add your number to their internal do not call list.

As stated above, I would never give to any charity who solicits me.  There are plenty of them that are scams.  They claim to be collecting for legitimate causes, but often only give less than 10% of the money collected to the charity, and keep the rest.  I sometimes get calls from the "POLICE protective association" (they introduce themselves with the emphasis on POLICE).  The local cops have said they have no affiliation with these people.

If you really want to give to a charity, you should initiate the contact yourself.  I don't personally give to any charity, because even the well known ones are getting to be fraudsters.

As far as AARP goes, they are legit, but I wouldn't bother with them.  They used to represent senior citizens fairly well.  Now, however, they are little more than an introduction service for companies that want to sell you crap insurance.
