Attorney General Wins $450K in Phone Harassment Case

So once again the bigger thieves get a slap and a pass. The more you steal, the lesser the punishment.

A drop in the bucket for them they will negoiate with them the AG and get it cut in half and then its over the money they have made so far is 100 times more then they will pay its nothing to them.

These jerks are also operating in Maryland.

yeah i had a few calls the last 3 weeks from someone suppose to be from the sheriff association. uknown caller on caller id. he ask how was i doing by my first name i said i was doing ok except from this call from an uknown caller then he hung up.they called back a week later and i talked with them and told them that this was just a scam.that my sheriff told me for them to call him.they hung up quick.i am from georgia it's the same kind of scam.

My mom fell for this scam years ago, what made her open her eyes was when the "sheriff's association" guy she promised donation money to said it could only be cash and he'd be by in an hour to get it.

The Police (at least in New York) NEVER call anybody up for money.  I got a call the other day from someone identifying themselves as an organization collecting money for the police.  When I stated the above, the s**thead hung up.

Apparently St. Louis City Circuit Judge Edward Sweeney is one corrupt judge.

The Police Protective Fund collected more than $5.9 million in 2006 yet, just $37,000 made it to the families of the slain officers.

And Sweeney makes a deal with them but doesn't shut them down?? What an azzhole.

Here's the real deal on these groups. I don't know of any state or DOJ action that doesn't prohibit actual police agencies (local, state or federal) from soliciting funds. NO ONE is going to let police officers ask you to make a donation before they decide whether to give you a ticket or let you go with a warning! That's "official oppression". Law enforcement agencies are funded by tax dollars. The problem is that PRIVATE organizations (usually tax-exempt groups designated by the IRS as a 501,c,3 group)use names that make it sound like they're associated with law enforcement agencies. Many groups like "Sheriff's Association", "Police Benefit Fund", "Association of State Troopers" or other similar sounding groups provide little or NO direct benefit to law enforcement agencies. Frequently, the callers are actually telemarketers who claim to be exempt from the DNC lists because they are calling on behalf of 501,c,3 groups --thank you, IRS. The usual cost of these telemarketing campaigns is about 80% of whatever they collect! The sound-like groups don't care because they get 20% more than they would get without the telemarketers. The 20% usually goes to the "members" of the private groups or to pay their relatives to be consultants. A group may or may not have anything to do with actual law enforcement agencies-- even retired, off-duty group, etc. The callers don't usually say that they ARE police, sheriffs, or whatever, they just make it sound like it and leave it up to you to make the assumption. When you get a call, ask the caller for the specific name of their company, not on whose behalf the call is made, and if they are calling for a law enforcement agency or a private organization. Most of the time, they'll hang up and you won't get more calls or, if the group is anywhere close to legit, they'll put your number on the company's DNC list. IF they say they are a law enforcement agency (not calling for or on behalf of), they're lying and you should file a complaint with the FTC or your state's attorneys office. Regardless of who is calling, it's YOUR choice whether to make a donation or not! They're asking for YOUR money and you already pay for law enforcement through taxes!

This company just called me in Texas and I am on a "Do Not Call" list.  So much for the list.  I just let the machine answer and they hung up.

What a laugh.   That pathetic fine is just the cost of doing business for these thieves.   They're laughing all the way to the bank.

Had similar calls out of Florida... Ugh, also Sprint.
Emailed the President of Sprint, informed him of the harrassment and the fact that as the "PROVIDER" of service to this entity, being informed of the misuse of SPRINT'S service, that they SPRINT, were responsible to intervene and disconnect service to those who harrass others. I had two email exchanges with the President and calls stopped. Go figure!
Telcos have a responsibility to clean up & correct ANY misuse of their services... Once known!
