I'm getting a lot of calls where caller ID shows the letter V and a lot of digits.  The actual phone number varies by area code as well as number.  A lot come from the Rochester, NY area, but not all.  Is this some sort of default ID or are they related?

    Example: ID=V09071754240058 Phone #= 1-718-516-3220
                  ID=V09071748300058 Phone #= 1-201-366-8529

The number could be some kind of business registration number?
Sometimes I purchase something and instead of the business name on my visa bill, I get a number like this. Who knows. Are you answering the call and asking who they are? Why waste time worrying about it?

I'm starting to see a lot of these type calls show up on my Caller ID as well.  I'm not sure what's going on with those, but it just makes me think it's some new method for these telemarketers and the likes to attempt to *hide* their identity.  None of them have ever left a message ... and as soon as one appears on my caller ID, they go into my online black list.

Its probably just a new way scammers are attempting to spoof numbers using VOIP....I think black listing them is a great idea!

There are actually several ways to spoof.  The most common (and easiest) these days is to simply assert the desired phony number in the cnum field.  Other methods, such as the use on an orange box, have become less common.  Manipulations involving SS7 are possible, but require a higher skill level, and usually offer no great benefit over the simple VOIP based cnum assertion.

Just so you know the long V number represents the kind of electronic dialer the telemarketing company uses. The one that we use in the outsource firm I work for is called Vdial and it is a new dialer also called Megatronand we have only been using it for less than a year. It tracks each and every call and whether a telemarketer is rude to someone they have a record of it and has monitoring equipment in the system to monitor tms all the time for quality and help them learn how to sell the product. Alot of collection agencies that electronically dial use this Vdialer to call people. The drawback to it it calls people over and over alot and makes the public mad because this long V number they see it on their caller id and do not understand what it means. Since is is electronic and computer dialing the company can put any area code and number in there to show up on peoples caller id. A 404 number shows up on people caller ids when we call and sometimes a 773 number or 971 number. Every computer we call from is different. Hope I have helped a little. I hate to bug people but have to due to the lack of jobs for the disabled in my town and the discrimination that goes along with it that is unprovable. Due to NAAFTA and greed I lost my job from MSI in 2009 and they moved to a state with the lowest minimum wage and got people for $6.20 an hour and did not have to pay mimimum wage due to a big loophole. It took my 400 interviews and 2 and a half years to get this job. But have done call center work since 1992.

Can't fault you for getting a job, but you are at a job that is invading people's privacy and violating the DO NOT CALL lists.

Please tell me how I can stop all of thi sand report these companies. WHO specifically is the source of these calls???????

    Pat,

Thanks for an informative post.  I gather that at least you aren't working for a scammer, and I understand your difficult situation.  Just don't call and tell me I can win a free cruise by answering a survey question ;^) .

We keep getting them here too, can't block them because it isn't a #

Plus Comcast's service sucks balls for blocking. I can only block 10 #s, used that up long ago.
Now I have 12 #s I can forward to my Google Voice, where I block them. Eventually they stop calling because they get a recording that says my # is disconnected.

    Screw them and screw Comcast.

I've gotten many of these calls lately.  Usually, I just ignore them,as they are fools for even thinking that they can make me add them to my contact lists or something...but when I *do* answer...there is no response...rather be unemployed than get a job for these [***].

The first 4 numbers are the date 0907 = 9/07, the next few numbers are probably the time where the autodialer is located

This number called my parents homeline which they recently acquired. I have no affiliation with the number at all but they called asking for me and whether I was available. My parents said no and that I was not presently available. The lady then continued to ask, whether it not the person she was speaking with was my partner. Since I'm single and straight I do not have a partner so I was and still morbidly confused on what this was all about. When answered with the response that she was my mother, the lady instantly hung up.... Seems kind of odd to me ....

They keep calling the business I work for asking for the owner.  When told we're publicly traded they either hang up or call me a liar (2 of each)
