  • FTC Sues to Halt "Yellow Pages" Business Directory Scams

    4 Jun 2009

The Federal Trade Commission has filed suit to halt the illegal operations of several telemarketing boiler rooms in Montreal, Canada. The agency alleged that the telemarketers bilked thousands of small- and medium-sized U.S. businesses and non-profits, including churches, schools, and charities, out of millions of dollars by deceiving them into paying for listings they never ordered in worthless business directories.

The FTC lawsuits, filed in federal court in Illinois, are part of a joint initiative with Canadian law enforcement authorities called 'Operation Mirage' that is aimed at cracking down on business directory scams. The FTC charged that the three telemarketing operations targeted businesses and other organizations with schemes to mislead them into paying hundreds of dollars each for unwanted business directory listings. The court has issued temporary restraining orders in the three cases.

In their phone calls to businesses and non-profits, the telemarketers often have posed as well-known local 'yellow pages' directories, and have told employees who answer the phone that they are calling to verify addresses and telephone numbers, the FTC's complaints stated. The telemarketers then used the 'verifications' as the basis to claim that these organizations agreed to listings that often cost $400 or more.

The FTC alleged that the companies then sent their victims invoices that again often imply that they are well-known yellow-pages companies. Many businesses and organizations simply paid these invoices. Those that did not were harassed with threatening phone calls and letters. To hide their location, the companies have used mailing addresses around the United States, in Miami; Phoenix; Plattsburgh, New York; Port Barre, Louisiana; Russell, Illinois; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Jersey City, New Jersey, the FTC alleged.

The complaints were filed against Reed Publishing, National Yellow Pages Online LLC, Integration Media Inc., doing business as GoAm Media, and others as well as their operators.

The Commission is seeking permanent injunctions that would force the defendants to give up their ill-gotten gains so that those funds can be used for consumer redress.

On a side note, last year GoAm Media wrote to us and threatened to sue 800Notes.com for the posts published at 866-697-0539 & 888-401-3843 stating that "...the statements made in the Blog asserting that the GOAM MEDIA is a 'scam' constitute defamation against the Company.GOAM MEDIA is legitimately formed and engaged in the lawful business of selling advertisements in business directories and is in good standing with all authorities."

my small business was called by GoAm Media. Luckily my receptionist verified our records and discovered that the contact information of the caller didn't match the directory's we've been working with for years.

If you get a call from some one trying to update your free lisitng you have to make a note that they are yellow pages scam. They call you from India, Phillipeness and many Asia Pacific Nation. The way to catch them is " They ask to say all answer in YES. If you have a low job title they will prep you to a high acceptable one that is like Owner, Administrator, Supervisor, Accountant.. Avoid doing that.

This people are outsourcing the work of your own telephone company.
your phone company open a new business naming it xxx yellow pages. they call thier own customer and charge them on your telephone bill. and if you dont pay they hire other agencies to collect the charges.

We have been getting these calls for several weeks, and asking to be removed from their list doesn't work. They are soliciting for yellowpages.com. Called YP customer service and they were helpful and are investigating. In the meantime we are going to buy a portable boat horn (can be heard for over a mile) and blast them in the ear when they call. Could I get in trouble for that?

Boat Horn will not hurt them, only you.
Intense volume does not travel down the phone lines.

            As soon as they ask you to verify information, start asking them who they are;

Then advise them that they must pay you to list your information on their website or that you will sue them for unauthorised use of your company information.

They will usually tell you that your listing is free, and that the listing has been in effect for several years. Tell them that they owe (insert sum here) for each year they have used your information without authorization.

I keep a New York City "taxi whistle" by my phone.  When these SOBs call me I blow it as hard as I can with the intent of causing their ear drum great pain.

It certainly has stopped more than one of these scams.

Well this is someone from El Salvador, they have opened a call center that is doing exactly the same. People are being trained by a Kabith Mani (yes from India) They claim to be for real. Operators do not know they are being used to scam Americans. The site is www.the2009yellowpages.com
The country already has its share of scam artists, we do not need the imports.
          Thanks

ACTUALLY YOU ARE WRONG , YOU OBVIOUSLY WORK FOR THE COMPANY AND MAKE YOUR MONEY TRYING TO SCAM PEOPLE ARE YOU HIS PARTNER OR IS IT YOU PRETENDING TO BE SOMEONE ELSE. THE COMPANY CALLS FROM AN UNKNOWN NUMBER SAYS THEY ARE JUST VERIFYING YOUR INFORMATION FOR AN UPDATE IN THE 2009 YELLOW PAGES. THEN ANOTHER PERSON COMES ON THE LINE AND SAYS IS ALL YOUR INFORMATION CORRECT YOU SAY YES THEN GET A BILL FOR 400.00, IF YOU DONT PAY THEY TURN YOU OVER TO A COLLECTION AGENCY. AND YOU NEVER SEE ANY FORM OF THE ADVERTISING ANYWHERE ITS A SCAM. FORTUNATELY I RUN MY OWN CORPORATION AND DID NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM. THEY HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET US FOR 2 YEARS NOW THEY CALL AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH. I HAVE RECORDED THERE PHONE CALLS MANY TIMES. AND TOLD THEM TO STOP CALLING EACH TIME, THEY NEVER DO. THEY USE FRADULENT INFORMATION, AND PRETEND TO BE YOUR LOCAL ADVERTISING PHONE COMPANY. AND THEY TELL YOU OUR RECORDS INDICATE YOU HAVE BEEN A CUSTOMER FOR YEARS & LIE, LIE, LIE. IF YOU DO NOT CONSIDER THAT A SCAM, THEN YOU NEED TO LOOK UP THE WORD IN A DICTIONARY. A UNITED STATES DICTIONARY AND UNDER SCAM YOU WILL SEE A PICTURE OF YOUR FRIEND. THIS COMPANY TAKES MONEY FROM HARD WORKING INDIVIDUALS UNDER FALSE PRETENSES. THATS STEALING AND IF YOU THINK THATS OKAY THEN YOU NEED HELP. AND I'M NOT A HATER, EXCEPT WHEN IT COMES TO PEOPLE LIKE YOU. THIS IS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, UNITED WHICH MEANS WE STAND TOGETHER, AMERICAN THE LAND OF THE FREE & THE HOME OF THE BRAVE. THATS RIGHT RED, WHITE AND BLUE BABY AND THESE COLORS NEVER RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!

          THIS JUST HAPPENED TO ME!!!

I couldn't understand a word they were saying which made me incredibly reluctant so I was incredibly difficult yet they continued to coerce me into just saying "yes" to move it along all the while asking me for personal information i.e. my DOB.  Why the heck would Yellowpages need my DOB to verify a listing not even mine?!!!  They advised me if I wasn't comfortable giving out MY DOB I could make one up.  What would be the purpose of asking for one then?  As I was being incredibly impossible, they told me if I answered all their questions "now" they wouldn't have to call me back for another two years for an update -the annoying calls would stop if I just cooperated and got this update over with.  It was all just so dodgy and none of it felt right.  I finally told them I would not go on further to which was replied, "if you stop here we'll have to post your information instead of your bosses".

Needless to say, things immediately turned for the worst and the second I threatened to take legal action if they posted any of my information they hung up.

Without any hesitation I rang the real "yellowpages.com".  Just one minute into my ramblings and they knew exactly who had contacted me and calmly explained it all.  They informed me of the scam and advised me to read all about it here.

          Un-believable!
