Working at the FTC, I knew the call was a fake. I’d heard that IRS imposter scams are on the rise. Earlier that day, I’d even given a webinar on IRS imposter scams as part of the FTC’s Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week“But aren’t you going to at least call them back?” the kids persisted. “No,” I explained, “if I do, they’ll just pressure me for money or ask for information that they can use to get my money. That’s the way this scam works.”

So, what did I do instead? I wrote down the phone number so I could report the call to the FTC and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). If I’d been concerned that maybe I owed money to the IRS, I knew that I could check with the IRS directly by calling 1-800-829-1040.

I have gotten several phone calls from  202-695-3851.  Some of the calls I got they stated they were from the IRS.  I told them that if they were from the IRS they must be scammers as the IRS would make calls they have other ways of dealing with fraud.  Today I got a call from this number, and HE said he was Sgt. Smith returning my call.  I told him I did not call him Goodbye.

I got a call from this number saying they were the IRS. I called them back. The guy on the other phone was Indian or such. Said that I was going to be arrested that they were going to have a police officer at my house within the next 2 hours. Said that I had was being audited for 3 years tax returns which I knew nothing about. Set up a payment plan with me to pay what I suppose, he said that the federal government had a lawsuit against me.

Message left on voicemail, calling from IRS, time sensitive legal matter. Fraud call, reported to IRS & FTC.

Robotic message stating that it was regarding a "time sensitive legal matter" and that a "law suit has been filed in your name."  Asked me to call the same number which I did just for kicks.  It was then an automated response & asked me to say my "full name" so they could direct my call better.  I said "Princess Pineapple Cake" and was directed to another voice mail identified as "IRS" asking me to leave a "detailed message" and they would get back to me.  I left a message notifying them that I had reported the number to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration & the Federal Trade Commission.  I told them that I hope they got caught for their fraudulent activity and rotted in prison.
