Keep getting phone numbers from ALA and 202 area code.  I have blocked the numbers, and what they do is change the extension and heading (last one said Washin, with area code 202), so calls still get through.

We keep receiving calls from this number and if we answer no one is there or if we don't they don't leave a message. The ID is ALA. How do we stop these calls?

Regarding Caller ALA. This caller has been calling for the past 2 weeks. Leaves no messages, just slowly hangs up. Got it blocked, will see.

I have been receiving these calls under "ALA" and "Washington,DC", sometimes 6 in one day. I called the number back and was informed that it is The American Lung Assoc.. They give you the option to stop receiving calls.  Just enter your number.
Hope this helps.  Unsolicited calls are so annoying.

No one else reading this page can ''stop these calls'' on your behalf. Your caller is not going to dutifully study random forum complaints and cannot magically determine which numbers should not be called based on anonymous comments.

These forums are for call recipients to share their experience and optionally offer advice. They are *NOT* direct or private channels to the phone bank boiler rooms we comment upon.

Charity calls are commonly placed by a commercial fundraiser, such as Associated Community Services, Dial America, Donor Care Center, Donor Services Group, Harris Direct, Horizon Marketing, InfoCision, Insight Teleservices, MDS, and TeleFund. Like all non-sales calls, these are exempt from federal and most state no-call registries, even though the call centers executing the recurring campaigns are very much for-profit and pocket most of what is collected. At times the ''charity'' client is itself a closet profit enterprise, compounding the deception.

As commercial entities, these hired call centers are expected to honor an internal no-call list and add any number upon request. Break that order, the FTC declares, and ''the telemarketer may be subject to a fine of up to $16,000.'' They can also be spanked for excess call abandonment and calling outside default hours.

Because the amounts collected are rather small, these call centers are quite motivated to repeatedly hassle you. The worst of the industry will "reload" a donor multiple times a year, preferring forgetful and easily confused victims. Most if not all such phone farms assume that your no-call order, when given verbally or by keypress, conveniently expires when a client's campaign ends.

In comments from November 2012 and June 2013 linked below, I've discussed simple steps I took to rid myself of a major pain fundraising boiler room by politely rubbing its face in federal laws. You will note that I never rely on verbal cease-communication demands. The call center in question happened to be InfoCision in Akron, for which American Lung had been a longtime client and may still be. Those fools were continuously torturing my parents several times a day for eight different charities. Since I took action three years ago, they've not dared try again.

I get calls from this number (202-794-6125) as well as 202-794-6635. They only call my work phone (no idea how they got this number) and no one is ever on the other line when I answer. I started receiving calls from this number (-6125) as soon as I started rejecting the -6635 number.

It's the American Lung Association.  If you call the # back and follow the prompts they will remove you from their call list.  I just did this a few minutes ago.  The message says it can take up to 30 days to be removed per federal law.  Let's see if it works.

I hate the American Lung Association. Proof of their perfidy is the fact that they keep on calling and their low rate of picking up from an autodialer.

They are not a charity they are a telemarketer.

"THEY ARE NOT A CHARITY THEY ARE A TELEMARKETER."

Which in the case of the DNC registry does not matter. It is the purpose of the call not the type of caller that determines if they are required to screen against the DNC list before calling.  The profit/non-profit status of the caller only determines if they are required to pay registration fees and purchase the DNC list if required.  There are numerous non-profits that have to screen against the DNC list because they are selling goods or services and numerous for-profit call centers that do not have to screen against the list before calling because the purpose of the call is not to sell goods or services nor to qualify those called as sales prospects for a third party. This is all clearly explained in the information pages on the DNC website and elsewhere.

Caller ID said ALA, one of many numbers they use. No message - blocked this one, too. Thanks DNC... FOR NOTHING!!! Damned endless spam / scam calls. I never donate to any cause so, they don't no longer get my phone number or address. Keep getting labels, notepads and magnets from years past. Using my donations wisely, I see. Helping so many... leave me alone. Never again.

The one call each day from this number or another number with the same prefix. My caller ID says it is anonymous. I do not answer the phone and after four rings it hangs up.
