- Carl HardeeReceived a call stating that the IRS was suing me.
- Caller: ?
- R HReceived a call today saying it was final notice from IRS. They were filing lawsuits against me. Automated call, woman's voice. I received the same call a few months ago but don't recall if it was this number. Sounded like the same woman.
- JCI received the same call. I guess this is a scam.
- TessieAlso left me a message stating the IRS was filing a lawsuit against me. I deal with the IRS regularly in my work and this is not how they operate. This is a scare tactic to get you to call. If you note on the message, it is from Internal Revenue Services. The IRS is the Internal Revenue Service.
- R GCame in at 7:06 a.m. I'm retired and just barely conscious at that hour. Didn't recognize the number on Caller ID and let the machine take it. Obvious scam. There should be a special place in hell for these people.
- David WSimilar to above. Scam. Did file complaint @ https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml.
- lolaThey are at it again this year.
- Caller: scam - IRS
- Jamie k| 1 replyI received the same call as above about 3 times. The woman said the irs is filing a lawsuit against me and this is my final notice. How do I get the calls to stop?
- Slim replies to Jamie k
Modern technology has given telespammers the tools to call you.Quote:How do I get the calls to stop?
Lawbreaking telescammers ignore both the Do Not Call list and any request you might make.
Modern technology can also protect you, if YOU do a few simple things!
The most effective thing to do is to get a call blocking device, service or app.
Then, use it correctly.
Google "call blocker" for more information. There are available apps (some free) for smart phones, and services and devices for landlines. Remember, the Do Not Call List is NOT a call blocker!
If you cannot use or afford such a tool, then click on the "Info" button, below, for alternate options (Javascript Required):Info• Do not answer calls from unknown numbers ... let them go to voicemail or answering service. Telespammers usually hang up after 3 or 4 rings.
• Do NOT return calls from unknown numbers! All that does is verify your phone number, and make it more valuable to more spam groups! And, in some cases, those return calls may cost $20 or more to complete. If the incoming call was important, they would have left a message!
• If you have a "dumb" cell phone, assign the scammer's number to a group named "scam" (or similar). Then, assign a silent ringtone to that group. (This also works for smartphones). The spammer will usually hang up before the phone goes to voicemail.
• Another option, for cell phones: Assign a "silent ringtone" as DEFAULT. Then, assign your favorite ringtones to all known friends / family / business numbers. That way, you will hear rings ONLY from those you wish to contact! You will not hear scammers' rings, even if they change their number! (This is also called "whitelisting", and will cause you to miss calls from non-whitelisted numbers).
If you want to report potential fraudulent or scam calls, here are two pages of links to (mostly government) sites in Canada and the USA were you can report those scams, or learn more about them.

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest. If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
