What options does one have to defend against intrusive callers?

    • The Do Not Call list (Federal or State)
Works, but is effective against ONLY "legitimate" telemarketers.  Charities, political callers, surveys and some other callers are exempt.   Scammers, spammers and criminals ignore the DNC list.

    • Shouting, screaming, swearing at the caller
Nope.  Does not stop calls.  May make you hoarse, and will disturb nearby people.

    • Call blocker app, device or service
Could be a good choice (even though the scammers can use fake phone numbers), and some apps are free!
Google "call blocker" for more information, or check your favorite online sales site for a list.

    * Your phone provider may also offer blocking services.  Check their web page for information.

If you cannot use any of the above defenses, then:
    • Do not answer calls from unknown numbers ... let them go to voicemail or answering service
    • Do NOT return calls from unknown numbers!  All that does is verify your phone number!  And, in some cases, those return calls may cost $20 or more to complete.
    http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/one-ring-cel ... ing-your-wallet
    • If you have a "dumb" cell phone, assign the scammer's number to a group named "scammers" (or similar).  Then, assign a silent ringtone to that group.

If you want to report potential fraudulent or scam calls, here are two pages of links to (mostly government) sites in Canada and the USA were you can report those scams, or learn more about them.

    Look here first:

I answered a call from the above number and was told it as Am Loan Corp.  When I said I was not interested he asked if I wanted to be put on the do not call list - I told him yes.  He didn't seem upset or anything - we'll see if they quite calling.  I've received several calls from different telemarkerters - normally I just ignore.

This number was calling me trying to solicit gay butt $ex.  I am mildly scared as this has never been offered to me over the phone, and I don't know if this Indian man on the other end of the phone can carry through with this offer.

Eric keeps calling and leaving voice mails saying been approved for loan up to $15,000. Calls come in saying Texas but no caller ID so never answer. Make them waste their trying to get me to answer. Safe someone from being bothered by them, maybe. Oh caller is from India or that part of the world. Heard that voice on calls about loans from other numbers.

This am loan corporation called looking for a Micheal. I said there is no one here by that name they asked my name and I said it of course and when they asked my age I denied giving it to them and told them to not contact my number again. I then received 5 calls after that called back and basically told them I was going to get them for harassment. The guy started my sexual noises and said "my big [***], going inside your wet pus** very disturbing I hung up and blocked the number

Guy with an accent claimed he was calling from American Loan Company and that my loan has been approved. Told him no thank you since I never applied for any loan from them. Apparently he sounds fishy and suspect this is a scam anyway.

If the call originates in another country, law enforcement and prosecutors in this country cannot do much.

    Still :

You can report this malicious caller by dialing *57 right after the call ends. This sets up a trace. Then you have to file a police report. The trace is not free - you will be billed by your phone supplier for it.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Malicious caller identification, activated by Vertical service code Star codes *57, is an upcharge fee subscription service offered by telephone company providers which, when dialed immediately after a malicious call, records meta-data for police follow-up. Remember to file a police report for each use - law enforcement will only act on the trace once a formal police report is filed in regard to the call.

Malicious caller identification facility, also called malicious call trace or caller activated malicious call trace, when subscribed or enabled, works by allowing a phone call recipient to mark or flag the preceding phone call connection as malicious (i.e. harassing, threatening, obscene, etc.) The phone system will then automatically trace the call by flagging station to station billing and routing data including start and end times. The call trace is not dependent upon call duration (as envisioned in dramatic movie plots) and will record all meta-data regardless of source conditions - even if the call was made from a silent number, payphone or a number with caller identification disabled. To protect privacy the resulting trace data is only made available to law enforcement.

In Canada, the service is usually marketed as call trace, and fees generally only apply when the service is used.

This number just called and messaged me I called back and talked to a guy supposedly named Shawn and he said I am approbed for a loan of up to $2000 dollars and in order to proceed with the money Inow my account they need to send $1000- $1500 to my account and resend it back to verify my account is active and then they will send the full $2000 to me. I told him it sounds like a scam shouldn't have to do that to receive money. Either you send it or you don't period. Verifying info is one thing but when u trying to get me to send money back to you that doesn't sound legit to me.
