- someone in canadaI'm just wondering who or what it is.........???
- UnavailableYeah, me too.... judging from the recent comments within a day - it is probably a telemarketer.
- Matt| 2 repliesThey've (sounds like India) been calling me weekly saying they're calling from "Windows" and today they told me that I cannot be removed from their calling list ever and I will receive their calls "for a lifetime".
- Caller: Not Windows?
- Slim replies to MattModern technology has given telespammers the tools to call you.
Lawbreaking telescammers ignore both the Do Not Call list and any request you might make.
Modern technology can also protect you, if YOU do a few simple things!
The most effective thing to do is to get a call blocking device, service or app.
Then, use it correctly.
Google "call blocker" for more information. There are available apps (some free) for smart phones, and services and devices for landlines.
If you cannot use or afford such a tool, then:
• Do not answer calls from unknown numbers ... let them go to voicemail or answering service. Telespammers usually hang up after 3 or 4 rings.
• Do NOT return calls from unknown numbers! All that does is verify your phone number, and make it more valuable to more spam groups! And, in some cases, those return calls may cost $20 or more to complete. If the incoming call was important, they would have left a message!
• If you have a "dumb" cell phone, assign the scammer's number to a group named "scam" (or similar). Then, assign a silent ringtone to that group. (This also works for smartphones). The spammer will usually hang up before the phone goes to voicemail.
• Another option, for cell phones: Assign a "silent ringtone" as DEFAULT. Then, assign your favorite ringtones to all known friends / family / business numbers. That way, you will hear rings ONLY from those you wish to contact! You will not hear scammers' rings, even if they change their number! (This is also called "whitelisting", and will cause you to miss calls from non-whitelisted numbers).
If you want to report potential fraudulent or scam calls, here are two pages of links to (mostly government) sites in Canada and the USA were you can report those scams, or learn more about them.

√ - michael benjamini keep getting these calls saying there are from windows but they cant verify any of my info...definite scam
- Call type: Telemarketer
- 012They called three times in one day. I didn't answer the first two. This is one of those "We're from Microsoft and your computer has errors/viruses" scams.
- Caller: Supposedly Microsoft
- CrystalThis number called and woke me up at 5 am this morning!
- Char8:30 am... They need to lose fingers. 1-574-123-4812 woke me up bright and early this morning.
- kristenrReceived a call from 574 123 4812. A man with a very heavy accent stated, after many repeated attempts, that he was from Windows and was providing a service call. He further stated that my computer had downloaded a virus and that I needed to be in front of my computer right away so he could help me.
I laughed at him, then told him I believed he was part of a scam and hung up.
I find it hard to believe that Windows would hire someone who barely speaks English to individually call each and every customer to inflom tbem of a virus.- Caller: "Windows"
- Nita replies to MattI have bell and a feature that allows you to block unwanted calls. You can store up to 12 numbers and then delete one or all and start over. Well worth the few bucks for this feature. I just blocked them.
- Tom BI found a solution for annoying phone solicitors (like the Microsoft Support Tech (with the India dialect) named "Tom") or the Solar Panel Salesman.
As I discuss the opportunity with them, I walk out to the car, put the phone on the hood of the car, then go lean on the horn button for about 5 seconds. Then I pick up the phone and asked "Did you hear me now" if not I repeat the cycle, eventually they are gone.
I figure it solves two problems a) he won't call me again, & 2) he won't be so bothered by the barking of his neighbor's dog.. - ObaaThis number has shown up numerous times on my caller ID, I don't answer it. But with a son in the military it makes me nervous with them calling so often (4 calls in the last 2days). I let the fax machine answer, most telemarketers do not call back after this, but this "out of area" number does - whats up with that?
- kageeThey call here at least weekly, sometimes more. I don't answer and they never leave a message. Thanks to the posters here I know it's a scam so will continue to just not answer.
- rae raePeople who call me about my computer having a virus are quickly notified I don't have a computer, I go to the library...I do have a smartphone but they didn't call about that...
