CID showed Marietta GA. No message was left. It probably was portfoolio. They have unleashed a whole batch of new numbers they are calling from, or spoofing. Pound sand scammers! If I don't recognize the ID or don't recognize the number, guess what? I DON'T ANSWER THE CALL!

Someone called this evening at 6:16 PM and my answering machine picked up.  They did not leave a message and the caller ID said Florence, KY.  But the call was really from Portfolio Recovery who is a debt collector - http://www.portfoliorecovery.com and they have many, many, many numbers to harass us with.  The website claims “Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC are here to help you pay your debt.  Call 800.772.1413 to speak with an Account Representative…”

Please refer to BigA’s posting on how to deal with these people.  https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-859-795-3413

Just to update this thread...received a call just now, did not pick up - auto blocked. I don't answer unknown numbers... they are automatically blocked.
I know someone has suggested (on yet another number thread for these bottom feeders) to send them (Portfolio Recovery) a certified letter to cease and desist, however, to do that you must actually answer (to know who they are after) and thus create a new time period, or acknowledge the "possibility" of a debt, or that someone in your family may or may not owe said debt. I am no lawyer, but it is a know fact. that if you acknowledge, or make contact with a debt collector, you may actually start the clock on a bad debt all over again. So, be careful with that.
I'll wait till the time they actually contact me by mail (they have yet to do that) to let me know of a "bad" debt as is required by law. Since they have not, I then presume they are just phishing for information to get someone and will continue to harass, regardless.

Caller ID says Georgia call, which means it's Portfolio Recovery - again. The CID always shows a different state when they call. They've been calling me for years and I don't owe them anything. Bottom feeding mouth breathers.

"They've been calling me for years and I don't owe them anything. "  And yet you apparently have done nothing about it.  Did you send them a "not me", cease and dist calling, or debt validation letter?  Did you file complaints with the correct agencies?  Did you consult a consumer lawyer who would sue them on your behalf and then you could collect a check from them for the harassment?  Or is the only thing you have done all these years is come here and post a complaint?  i simply cannot feel sympathy for someone who puts up with this for years and does nothing to help themselves.

You need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation, cease and desist calling, or "not me" letter.  You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to.  Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment.  If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it.

Did they send you this letter as required by law and you ignored it?

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Called cell on 04-13-16 at 5:59 p.m. PDT, caller ID shows Mableton, GA no name.  Posts on this site identified the caller as Portfolio Recovery Associates.  They started calling me about a month ago, at least twice daily, in the morning and evening.  This is my second call today from PRA.

Portfolio is notorious for cold calling people and accusing them of owing money in an attempt to illegally collect on a nonexistent debt.

If you receive many calls from Portfolio Recovery, check the internet for attorneys who specialize in suing debt collectors.  A friend of mine in California did so, and received about $2,000 in statutory damages.  It was a contingency case so he didn't have to pay anything up front.  Keep copies of cell phone screen shots and keep a log of all calls and messages received.

Called cell on 04-27-16 at 2:44 p.m. PDT, no name on caller ID / phone shows call came from Mableton, Georgia.  PRA calls me about twice a day.

I talked to an FDCPA attorney who told me I could obtain $500 in damages for each unwanted call from Portfolio Recovery, but that I would have to notify them beforehand that I don’t want them to call me.  You might also want to contact an attorney.

The attorney I spoke to was at Krohn & Moss 323-988-2400 (Los Angeles, California).

Portfolio is notorious for cold calling people and accusing them of owing money in an attempt to illegally collect on a nonexistent or non-collectable debt.
