Received a robo-call that said that I or my attorney needed to call "Officer Eric Foster" about a "time sensitive issue".  There was a vague threat about what could happen if the message was ignored.  Obviously a scam.  Bad Kiwi (New Zealand) accent.

some idiot called, left a message, said some crap in an immigrant accent which was barely understandable, yet left this number. already knowing it was a scam i called back because i had time to kill to laugh at him. i called once someone picks up and hangs up, called again to hear someone answer and say "thank you for calling Internal Revenue Service, this is Shaun White" immediately i laughed thinking he was a shaun white olympic snowboarder fan, than i said "yea you called me", he hangs up. Clearly a scam from a classic idiot.  just called him now, he answers with same statement then i hang up.

Received 2 calls today from this number that caller ID identified as coming from Buffalo, New York (716-261-2191), both left a vm.  The first caller said he was from the IRS and we needed to call him (at the same number) or risk getting in big trouble.  Then said if he didn't hear from us he better hear from our attorney or some such - it was difficult to understand what was being said.  The caller in the second message (same number, probably the same guy, about 6 hours later) identified himself as Officer Eric White.  Heavy accent, again difficult to understand, and it seemed as if he was trying to mimic a New York accent on top of it.  He said we needed to call or have our attorney call him, and that we better not ignore returning the call... made a lame threat that trouble would fall down around us or some such if we didn't respond to the call, etc.  Scam.

Caller left message from this number saying her was officer Eric Foster and if I or my attorney did not call him back he wishes me good luck as the situation badly unfolds on me.  He said the issue at hand is time sensitive.

Exactly the same situation as Lori posted – Except the accent of this 'Officer Eric Foster' was oddly Caribbean and Austrian at the same time. Also with a vague threat. Displayed as NY number.

Same thing as everyone else. Hard to understand, bad accent, etc...  Just a silly message on a time sensative issue, wishing me good luck if I didn't return the call, weird threat. Total scam!

    Voicemail from (716) 261-2191
"Recently(?) time sensitive. My name is officer at Rick Forster and hotline to my division is 716-261-2191. I repeat my number is 716-261-2191. Now don't try to disregard this message and do return the call. If you don't return the call and if I don't hear from your attorney either then the only thing I can do is obvious you a good luck as situation badly unfolds on you. So give me a call back as soon as you get this message. Thank you."

Got a voice mail message from Officer Eric Foster.  Said it was time sensitive.  Told me if my attorney or myself did not call him back, that he wished me good luck.  This happened to me over a year ago too.  Bad accent.  716-261-7191 was his number.

A caution from the *real* IRS, excerpted:

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

... "Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. .... Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail.

The FTC has issued similar warnings twice this Spring:

"Tax season may be over, but scammers posing as IRS officials continue to call, saying people owe taxes and better pay up. .... The IRS doesn’t ask people to pay with prepaid debit cards or wire transfers, and doesn’t ask for credit card numbers over the phone."
