Caller is "Kathy Martin," who works at "Law Firm" and is calling to tell me to contact her immediately about a case in which I'm a "prime suspect."  She is from Indian.  I had to block calls from an another Indian, "David Clark" who worked at "Law Office," who called several times about the same bogus claim.  (He was calling from Beverly Hills, CA.)  I learned here that some people being bothered by "David Clark" (310-499-0697) were also being bothered by a woman- possibly "Kathy Martin."  This is a scam, they try to scare you into giving them money- Don't give them anything!  Why can't these people be stopped?

He-Jim-who had a very heavy accent, asked for my son by name and said they have his name and social security number and said he or his lawyer had "better" call him back or they can't be responsible for what will happen to him. Semi threatening. I still have it. Couldn't understand most of it or his last name and the name of his "law" firm".  Get these alot.

Just received a voicemail from "Kathy Martin" at a law firm....with a middle eastern accent. Dead giveaway. Obvious scam. These types of calls have been going around for months, even years. It's beyond frustrating.

I received a call from this number as well about an hour ago.  The same story as everyone else.  A guy named Jim wanted me to verify my information. They claim they are a law firm and go as far as to answer the phone as a law firm.  They said someone opened up a payday loan under my social security number and there is a lawsuit against me.  Yep a scam!!!  I Nhad these kind of calls before!

Have received two calls already.  TMobile claims not to give out numbers.  How did this person get my cell number then?  This number is already registered with the DO NOT CALL list.  So, you just have to ignore the calls.

Kathy Marten called me with this number. Was the same as everyone else here. If you were really getting sued this not how it is done.A real law firm does not play around like this. They will not waste there time with false threats.Don't answer when they call. They are trying to scare you into at least calling back.Don't give them the satisfaction.

This is extortion dressed as debt collection. The agents' horrid threats are empty and their conduct is illegal. As early as possible it's critical to determine if your collector is domestic or yet another South Asian faker. The former you can sue into submission; the latter tend to be out of reach.

My notes from October 2011 on payday loan and "hot check" collectors are linked below.

A "prime suspect", indeed! These South Asian posers are watching too many TV crime dramas. The mere insinuation that your alleged debt amounts to a criminal act is illegal per US federal law.

The Beverly Hills phone number could well have been spoofed, and the call center tucked away safely within Ahmedabad where the civil lawsuit you would otherwise launch can't touch 'em.

They pay attention to everything that show up on their Television sets. If they can imitate Hollywood, they'll imitate anything that shows up on their televisions. Since they grew up there, they can't imitate the American accent but they sure researched American names. They prey on people's fear and think that people would easily get scared and fall for their threats if they pretended to be a cop, an investigator, a federal agency or whatever their twisted minds can imagine. They mostly prey on women thinking women here are weak. Judging from their foul language, I am sure they treat their own women like crap.

Most of your remarks are echoed in what others have reported about the South Asian PDL thugs, in particular the misogynist angle and their often ridiculous celebrity aliases. This is a battle of cultures as well as economics. Their sense of legal boundaries isn't like ours. We Americans enjoy many safeguards of our privacy and rights of due process which may be lacking in the scammers' experience. Our respect for women may not be reflected in their pay stubs, but no one here is proud to be a wifebeater.

Indeed, fear does a great job of filling logical gaps. The criminal threats need not be plausible but merely cloud a person's better judgment long enough to empty a bank account. Part of our task is to fan away those smokescreens.

I just got this same call and the guy said that Advance America had given me an online loan and why didnt I pay it back. I told him I had never asked for an online loan. He then proceeded to to read me my rights and told me I was officially under arrest and to wait for an officer of the law to come get me. I laughed and hung up. I then called him back (blocking my number) and he called me every bad name he could think of, including some he obviously made up. I have had these calls before and the way I got them to stop is I would call them 50 times in one day and just say stupid things to them. Eventually they gave up.

I got the same phone calls about 4 months ago then I started calling them back and asking for things like the name of the law firm, their bar number, and where they were located. I also ask them when I took this loan out, how much, and when I was supposed to pay it back. They got tired of me and told me to quit calling them and I said I would if they quit calling me, it worked till today. Same guy called me, I told him I remembered him and asked if he wanted to play this game, he said yes. I asked for his law firm he told me Mother f....... mother f..... mother and hung up. I called back and the number was no longer in service. I have way too much fun.
