Message stated my name & Social Security number had been "associated with a fraud case" and asked me to call their "legal office." My guess? First thing they'll ask when you call is your name and Social Security number. Beware, beware.

This is a collection agency seeking to collect on old written-off debts.  They will tell you it's about a "fraud case" they are investigating and pretend they are law enforcement agents.  Don't fall for it!

I received a call from this number stating that they received my name and social and I was being investigated in a fraud case. Then after they figure I was they stated there names as agent Lockhart and someone from litigation department Melanie Davis. If I didn't comply with and let them know how I was suppose to being paying they would turn over to riverside court. They were going to email me something because I told them I didn't receive anything from them in the mail. I am assuming now that they are not with any authority agency they are just a collection agency fronting to be a local government agency which is wrong.

The card number I gave them was a money card visa which is not even active.  They left a message and told me to ask for Chad Lockhart. ext 105

Got a voice mail from "Chad Lockhart" with "Weinberg Stein and Associates check fraud division" regarding "depository check fraud" wanting me to call back to either dispute the collection or "be removed from the court calendar", which I assume means pay off an old debt they may have purchased.

I have just recently received a call from this company also> the company name is wynberg stein & associates.. I am very confused this company has left a voice me saying that i could face charges for check fraud  and saying that I could spend months in jail if convicted.. I originally took out a payday loan with a company that i attempted to pay back, but due to unexpected hardships what I had to offer they weren't willing to take and this was at the end of 2010. I did close the account because I didn't want my account to be over drafted so my plan was to close the account and pay them by money order instead.. To make a long story short I received a call from "investigator smith and also a Mr Jones.. Saying that if i don't pay they will be forced to submit the papers so that I will have to settle this in court there fore I will owe way more that the 600 I owe. I'm struggling really bad right now and it's really hard to come up with that kind of money being a single parent. I really want to make sure that this is a legit company that I will be giving my money to. I saved the voice mail he left saying that I could face jail time and fines. I really don't know where to go from here when I google the company name that he spelled out for me I can't find anything Please Please Help!!!!

I recieved a call from the above 800 number from a Mr. Jones stating he was a represesntative of Weinberg and Stein. He too said that mine was check fraud and that they would be taking me to court for defaulting on a payday loan after I was laid-off with up to two years jail time The payday company ran the check through approximately 20 times. Even after a stop pay was put on the check in question. I was in arrears with my bank in excess of $1,000. They've been trying this fraudulent tactic for about a year now with some very creative spins on it designed to put you in a place of fear. I was unemployed for a year. That's the reason the paydate note wasn't honored to begin with.

i got a call from 800-584-2062, weinberg stein and associates. telling me about legal issues and "check fraud", and jail time. i gave my payment info, out of sudden fear that they imposed. well, it was lingering in my mind and decided to do research because there was alot of unanswered questions. I did research and found that there is no such legal attorney by the name of "weingbergstein and associates" in atlanta. there is a book firm. in fact, the closest weingbergstein and associates i did find, were found in VA and they are family law attorneys. upon further research, i found the following link....

    http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/csr/2705389802.html

after reading this, i closed my debit card information to stop payment.

i want to add that i requested a paperwork trail or an email be sent to me, and up to date have yet to recieve anything. They also stated that they sent me a letter in the mail but was returned to sender. Which is false, because i have lived here  for 13 years have always recieved my mail.  be cautious. hope this info helps. check the link if you are i doubt.

I 'm seriously thinking of changing my number because this company has my mailing address and hasn't sent me anything via mail. I will just pay it when I get the money but times are too hard they are constantly threatening me with check fraud I don't trust them at all and they are very intimidating. I think that it's just another collection agency but it kinda scared me since check fraud is a serious matter and they swear I''ll get jail time and have to pay numerous court costs.. Another thing i find strange is that when you call and don't know the extension you have to press 200 until someone picks up but if no one answers it rings for a while then says good bye which does not sound seem professional at all and I haven't been able to find anything or any website relating to this company but when I spoke to the last guy before I hung up I asked him to provide me with the proper spelling of the company and he made a smart remark saying go ahead and Google me which I did but I can't find anything...

Don't even consider paying a shaved penny. Any collector coming on breathing fire, spouting "hot check" claims, and making illegal threats has ZERO proof. Everyone commenting in this thread has had their rights stomped on by these extortionist tactics. The real trick now is determining the call origin.

This sounds enough like the overseas fake payday loan collectors that there may be little recourse beyond filing complaints with regulators. But if the boiler room has a US address, it's "game on"! The CL link from "Angel in Texas" points to a Weinbergstein & Associates in Atlanta, one of the nation's meccas for lawbreaking collection agencies. Maybe it's a match, or you might need more intel. If you can find your tormentors, you can serve them a summons -- a real one, unlike theirs -- once you set the correct legal traps.

I got a call from "Investigator Smith" at work when I wasn't there. It freaked me out, but I decided to do some research and I know they are scammers. I save save every number they call me from and never speak to them. They call me from all types of different numbers. When I first heard of them they had called my sister and freaked her out so I called them back. The woman was very demanding, rude, and intimidating and I almost paid her twice my unpaid loan amount. I felt something was wrong and found this website that confirmed they were fake. Then my sister called them back and was placed back and forth between the receptionist and the debt collector who were the same person and she began to answer the phone with a different name but caught herself halfway thru. They are scammers and liars. I should have know better when they called my sister's phone becuase I haven't changed my number in the past 5 years. They didn't even have my number!! Don't talk to them and don't confirm your information with them because they don't have it, that's why they ask!!!

I'm glad I read this because the first investigator I received calls from was investigator smith.. I was so freaked because I knew I had close my account and because they didn't have accents like the foreigners I figured they were legit. After all this research they will not get a dime at a point I was considering paying them money that I really couldn't afford to pay.. This is what confuses me ok the loan I owe is with cash net usa and now that it's so far past due they sent my case to a collection agency. When I called cash net about two weeks ago to see who to pay the gave me the number to the national debt collectors whom gave me this number 186696922 so this is who I'm supposed to be paying but from research they are scammers too so when I have the money I really don't know who to pay...

Do not pay this at all.  It is a SCAM.  They want to get your checking account number and routing number to deduct the cost of the "fraud check" from there.  DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION
