Someone named Madison left a message to return a call saying they were from the Social Security Administration and had questions about a 2012 return and needed additional information.

Social Security Administration has only ever contacted me by mail before. I see on other sites that people are getting calls from this number and even accountants consider it a scam because they want employee SSN. Do not give that information out over the phone!

    Did not return call

Just got the same voicemail from a Patricia Jackson from the "Social Security Administration" saying there was a discrepancy in my tax return. Clearly a scam based on her phone demeanor alone. Definitely not calling back.

Not a spam call. It is actually the SSA.  They called me back about an inquiry I'd made on their website....About 7 days later than they'd indicated on their site, but then again, this post is not about the SSA efficiency...

This is the Social Security Administration's phone line. Hopefully they gave you an extension or their last name or you'll never get a hold of anyone.

Why would SSA call you for taxes and not IRS? Also scammers can fake the number they call from and show any number on caller ID. So, if you call back it hoes to a real ssa number but you cant talk to anyone because you do not have a name or extension. So, then it seems legit for when they call you again and finish the scam. Uncle Sam will leave a message and a name and an extension. Don't give them your information. If they want to talk and it is Uncle Sam tell them to send you USPS mail with their request and then you will act on it. Arrested? PLEASE. Did they magically become the Dept. Of Justice? Are they suddenly not the SSA but now are the US Attorney?  It's called due process and a phone call doesn't meet the requirements.  Thank a soldier, sailor or airman and public servants for defending and upholding the US Constitution. Be proud and grateful that you are in America.

It's actually the business services helpline at SSA. If you have the callers phone extension you can call 800-772-6270 (the number listed on ssa.gov's business services side) and then get transfered to the extension they left you, though calling this number is more direct.

Where did you find that information on the ssa.gov website ?
No proof means you are a shill for a scammer.

This is all I could find :

I realize that local Social Security offices will return calls - but I doubt they ever originate calls the way people have been describing here. They have not contacted the Social Security Administration, so why are they getting calls? Is someone impersonating them and stealing their identity, and later the SSA is calling back? Or are these callers scammers trying to steal an identity?

Read what this person posted for a good example :

I got a call from this number asking me to resubmit W-2s because their machine couldn't read the 8 per page I originally sent.  Asked to send 4 per page and make them darker.
I only EVER send 2 per page because that's how I choose to have my software print them.  I told her that (once she stopped chattering on about how her machine couldn't read the ones I sent), and she then backtracked saying she would try to scan them through again - the docs she already had.
I did NOT, and would not ever send any documents as a response to a phone call.  Requests for resubmission of W-2s will ALWAYS come via U S Mail.  ALWAYS.  I've gotten requests for unreadable or lost forms before.  This is likely a scam.

This is the real deal, guys. Take these calls seriously. I had trouble getting online access to the SSA website and these people helped me out. It is a legitimate field office.

I think it's a scam.  The call was about a client of mine.  The person was vague about the reason for the call.  First she said the call was a follow-up about a questionnaire they sent that wasn't answered.  I said I had no knowledge of such a questionnaire, and she should resend it.  She then said to fax the client's 2013 W-2's because they never received them.  I said that I would not disclose private information of a client without a letter.  I said call the client.  After I hung up I called to warn the client.  He had also talked to her, and it again was very disconnected.

rec'd a call from this number, with an extension that looks like another phone number.  SSA has 855-257-0385 - it is the extension that I am suspicious of.   If you dial the extension it goes to a cell phone!  Don't fall for these phone scams.  Going to the SSA office to verify.

Yeah they called me too. Some seem to have really long extensions but I got to an actual person who told me how to fix my w2's (using w2c's, very interesting) so there is that. I ended up calling the business line that Katie posted and they gave me the same info. ^^
