I recently applied online for SS benefits.   Had a phone message with caller ID showing 855-257-0343.  Gentleman leaving a message stated his name, number, why he was calling and asked me to return his call so they could go over a few things before approving my SS application.  Sounded correct since I did recently apply.

Found this forum when checking out the phone number so I called the main SS Administration number  1-800-772-1213.  Went thru the prompts for "check claim status".  After going thru those prompts and having a status report they asked if I needed to speak with a representative.  I said yes and they said within 1 hour someone would return my call as all agents were currently busy.    This was all automated and very  easy.   True to their word they called back in about 50 minutes.

I explained that I wanted to verify the 855 number and the person calling was actually with the SSA.   The lady said they have toll free numbers with every prefix available and it's normal for someone to call when you have applied for benefits.  She also asked only my name (already given on the automated call) and birth date.  She said give her a few minutes and she'd check out everything to see if someone from their office did in fact call.  In less then 2 minutes she was back told me the date and time frame of the original call from the 855 number (I had not mentioned this previously) and told me the things they wanted to confirm with me.  She said they should have provided me with the exact amount of benefits as well which was correct.  In addition she said it shows I had in fact called the 855 number and what day.   This was correct as I called the 855 number to check things out without giving personal information before calling SS main 800 number to confirm it was legit.

I do agree with others posting here that when making an online application it should state you would be contacted by phone by someone from the SSA.   If not on the website for sure after you submit the application.  All I got was a note with confirmation saying check status online in about 5 business days.   So if you have in fact recently applied for SS benefits then a call with ID as Social Security Administration from 855-257-0343 would be legit.  If you have not applied or contacted the SSA then be sure to check it out first by calling 1-800-772-1213 (main SSA number).

One correction in my previous post....the ORIGINAL call from the Social Security Administration was from
800-772 -1213 (caller ID).   The gentleman said for me to return his call at 855-257-0343.

I recently applied online for SS benefits.    A few days later I got a phone message with caller ID showing 800-772-1213 Social Security Administration.   Gentleman leaving a message stated his name, why he was calling and asked me to return his call  at 855-257-0343 so he could go over a few things before my application was approved.   Sounded  legit since I did recently apply.

Found this forum when checking out the  855 phone number so I called the main SS Administration number  (1-800-772-1213 ) .  Went thru the  automated prompts for "check claim status" , got a status update and was asked if I needed to speak with a representative.   I said yes and  was told within 1 hour someone would return my call as all agents were currently busy.    This was all automated and very  easy.   True to their word they called back in about 50 minutes.

I explained that I wanted to verify the 855 number and  that  the person calling was actually with the SSA.   The lady said they have toll free numbers with every prefix available and it's normal for someone to call when you have applied for benefits.  She also asked only my name (already given on the automated call) and birth date.  She said give her a few minutes and she'd check out everything to see if someone from their office did in fact call.  In less then 2 minutes she was back and told me the date and time frame of the original call from the 800-772-1213 number (I had not previously mentioned the date or time of the call).  She also told me the things they wanted to confirm with me.  She said they should have provided me with the exact amount of benefits as well which was correct.  In addition she said it shows I had called the 855 number and what day.   This was correct as I called the 855 number to check things out without giving personal information before calling SS main 800 number to confirm it was legit.

I do agree with others posting here that when making an online application it should state you would be contacted  via  phone by someone from the SSA.   If not on the website for sure after you submit the application.  All I got was a note with confirmation saying check status online in about 5 business days.    When you do return the call to the 855 number it would be nice if they could some how confirm some information that helps you know they are legit.   Perhaps the date/time you submitted application online or confirmation number?

So if you have in fact recently applied for SS benefits then a call with ID as Social Security Administration from would be legit.  If you have not applied or contacted the SSA  recently then be sure to check it out first by calling  the main Social Security Administration number at 1-800-772-1213 .

This number is the Social Security office in New Mexico. I called them back and I also have papers that came in the mail from SSA with the same number. It is legit.

It is good to hear that his is probably a legit number (well that is if someone is not peppering this list with false legits.)
I started my SS online and received as note asking me to call.  The message center is too busy so I was bumped to voice mail.  The message said that I should leave my name , phone and SS#.  Foolishly I did and as soon as I hung up I wondered what I just did.  Even if it is legitimate, I probably did not have to give my SSN.  Last 4 might have been better.

Now I will wonder about it until I get a call back letting my know that I did not mess up.
    Am I cautious or paranoid?

Unfortunately, I  received a call and called back leaving my name  and social security number for Mrs. Nelson to call me back.
Seeing these comments claiming they handle Texas area SSA applications let's me know that it must be a  fake as I live in NC

If ever you doubt the person or the call as metnioned before, call the SSA National 800#. They can verify the number you received a call from as well as the employee that called you works for SSA.

I received a call from the same number.  I was hesitant at first, but took the plunge.  Thank you for the confirmation that this is really social security.

Message left asking my wife to call to verify I'm married to her, to secure my SS benefit. Repeated attempts to call back and lengthy waits, always resulting in being sent to a non-functioning voicemail box. Very odd message. Will not try again to return call. Instead will log in online and see what's up. Whether or not this is a hacked phone no., the method here is madness. Will never give my SSN by phone.

I called the SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION and they verifies that the number was the Alburquerque SSA.  Unless the number I called after googling the SSA was itself a scam which makes it a really convincing scam this seems legitimate.

We received a call from the 800-772-1213, which is the Social Security Administration's actual phone number and the person asked the same questions. My husband gave her his social security number, DOB, place of birth, etc. but saw that I was concerned and told her that his wife was concerned, and he would like to verify that she was actually from the Social Security Administration. She said she understood and gave him this number (855-257-0343) for him to call her back. She said her name is  Veronica Edwards. After reading some of the posts on this site, we thought maybe she was legit. He tried to call her back but was on hold for too long and so he left a message and hung up. Not sure if it was really Social Security or not - since scammers are able to call from what appears to be a legitimate phone number. My husband thinks she is legitimate since he says "how would she know our cell phone number if she was not really from the SSA?"

Received call allegedly from SSA regarding my recent application, "with a few questions that needed to be addressed". Asked for my SS#. Would not provide. He offered to send email with this message:  Mrs. Oland,

I received your application for Social Security retirement benefits and there are a couple of issues I need to go over with you before processing your claim.
Please let me know if there is another phone number that I can reach you at during the daytime and what is a good time of day to reach you.
You can also try to call me at 1-855-257-0343 from 8 AM to 4 PM MST, Monday through Friday.

    Thank you!

John Hall, thanks for confirming that this is indeed a legitimate SSA call.  However, please do not encourage folks to "lighten up" about potential scams.  There are way WAY too many folks scammed every single day by very crafty and deceitful individuals, and it behooves us all to be very vigilant while online or on the telephone.  Although not paranoid by nature and probably a bit too easy going myself, I would rather encourage others to be too careful than not careful enough.  Just a few thoughts - thanks for "listening" and for your time!

As others have reported the caller Carlos Sanchez stated he was from the SSA and asked to to confirm details like my ss# over the phone. I refused and he sent an email asking me to call this number. What is most troubling is that his call and email to me followed an on line interaction with the actual SSA.

Mom got a call over Thanksgiving week. They (0343) left voicemail. I gave a call back following Monday. Ask for moms SS# first (I got hesitant). I did not give them her #. I explained that I was not 100% comfortable and would contact them back. I then contacted the SS # posted on their website. (1213) They (1213) verified it was a legit call from the New Mexico office and speaking with them was fine. Hope this helps. If anyone feels uncomfortable I recommend doing what I did for piece of mind. Call the 1213 # to ensure contact was attempted by legit SS agency.
