- jp| 3 repliesYes I did. Told me it was the US justice department. I think its a fraud.
- CWG40They said it was a research study of some kind.
- Dept of justiceTold dept of justice wanted to give me $20 for information on health and safety. Told to call this number. Call originated from 2143604784
- Caller: dept of justice
- nsI had the same message .. dept of justice doing a survey...would give me $20.
- Caller: 214-360-4784
- Call type: Survey
- NE| 1 replyAlmost every day for the last three weeks I have been getting a call from 212-206-6951. Sometimes they leave a message about The Department of Justice wanting me to take a survey on "health and safety" for which they will pay me $20. When they leave a message it is always a well-spoken woman who says to call 855-749-6249 to set up an appointment, etc. I don't know if this is legit or a scam, but I am too wary to call back and give anyone any information. If anyone finds out anything useful on this call, I would love to hear it!
- Caller: Department of Justice??
- Call type: Survey
- William replies to NEPlease also post that information here : https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-212-206-6951
Never heard of the DOJ taking surveys ! They investigate and prosecute ! - JaneI also received a call from 214-360-4784 telling me that it was a call from the Department of Justice. I took some information from the lady that called she gave me their website www.bjs.gov and toll free number 1-855-749-6249. I researched the information she gave me and it is all legitimate. I agreed to do the survey and in about a week I received a check for 20 dollars and was invited to do another survey very similar to the first one for another 20 dollars. I completed the second survey and again with in week they sent me the second check. Both checks were good and came in a time when I needed the money.
- Caller: Westat
- Call type: Survey
- Legitimate Study| 1 replyMy sister works for Westat and this is in fact a legitimate study. Westat is a social science research organization that conducts a variety of surveys from health, education, transportation, travel, etc on behalf of many organizations including a variety of government agencies. They have been in business for over 50 years. Feel free to look at their website, www.westat.com to inform yourselves on the work that they do.
- Legitimate Study| 8 repliesSuch a trolls, how about you educate yourselves. Report all you want they are a legitimate company. Enjoy wasting your time! Makes no sense arguing with the ignorant.
- SomeCallMeDuh replies to Legitimate StudyWestat is a legitimate company, but then again, so is the Grants Department . Their name still gets used for scams.
I can not confirm the legitimacy of this particular call, but it appears to be similar to a scam described here :
http://www.ncdoj.gov/News-and-Alerts/Alerts/Don-t-fall-for-fake-surveys.aspx
Is $20 really worth the risk of identity theft is this call turns out to be yet another one ? - Slim replies to Legitimate Study| 4 repliesWestat may indeed be a legitimate company.
However, how can we know the calls are coming from them, specially when other posters here claim the calls were from the Department of Justice?
Perhaps something is trying to disguise itself as the DOJ or Westat. - Elspeth replies to Legitimate StudyRepeat shill - and attacking those who would urge caution? Suspicious!
- Legitimate Study replies to Slim| 3 repliesIf you're ever it doubt, ask questions. I guarantee they provide the company website and the website for the study they are calling in reference to along with telephone numbers. I've been called about surveys and have always taken the information provided and confirmed it on my own. Legitimate studies would never ask for personal information like a SSN and I'm certain they don't.
We all have common sense we just have to use it.. - William replies to Legitimate StudyIf they are such a legitimate company, how about telling us how to get on their internal Do Not Call list?
- Yes replies to Legitimate StudyWe all have common sense - and common sense dictates that we should not trust the Caller ID or alleged identity of someone, since spoofing numbers is very easy to do.
- SomeCallMeDuh replies to Legitimate StudyYou'll forgive me my skepticism but your internet certainty and guarantees are not enough for me to change my opinion. $20 is not worth potential years of trying to straighten out the effects of identity theft.
- Slim replies to Legitimate Study>> If you're ever it doubt, ask questions. <<
Unfortunately, calling back that number would merely connect to the spammer/scammer, if the caller was indeed a spammer/scammer.
THAT is common sense!
In order to verify that number, we would need to call the real Westat people, and have them verify that is one of their phone numbers. The only number I can find on the Westat site has a 301 area code. The usual way to contact them is via an online form ... and an answer to "what are your real phone numbers" would probably take several days.
UPDATE:
There are several other Westat phone numbers shown on their site. NO 855 number is shown!
How about YOU giving us a faster way to contact Westat, to verify your claims? - Legitimate Study| 2 repliesMy sisters not here to ask, but I did my own research and found some threads about Westat, scamming, etc and found this one from years ago. https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-240-453-2908/6. Feel free to check out the full post on page 6, but I found this from an ex employee.
"The reason they say they are not held by the rules of the DNC list is that they are not 'soliciting'….If someone tells you they can't take you off a list, it's because there isn't one. Out of all the available numbers in your area, they select a random group. They don't know until they call that it is a residence or a business. The reason the cell phone questions, the DOT wants to reach that group of people who only use a cell phone vs a cell and land line….If a company is not willing to be transparent and let you research them, then they are probably a scam......don't be stupid people. PS, this company recently fired me...doesn't mean the research isn't legitimate…. Also, if you have a rude person on the phone, complain to them, they are being monitored and if they don't handle your call and objections appropriately, they are gone, as there is a level of professionalism that is expected from the employees, and if half the people here got the info they say they did about not being able to stop the calls, they probably don't work there anymore!!"
Needless to say this has taken up entirely too much of my time. If you want the calls to stop tell them when they call or don't pick up. We all have choices, so do what you want, just be smart about it. In the mean time remain blessed.. - Don replies to jpTake the 'survey', 'possibly' earn a measly $ 20, and 'possibly' have your personal information stolen, and finances ruined. Those taking the chance are likely players of Russian Roulette.
- Tamianth replies to Legitimate StudyCharities, along with some Survey's and Political calls, are exempt from the DNC as a ROT, however, they can still get into trouble for not placing you on a internal DNC when asked.

Posters and lurkers should consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $40.00 or less. If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.
