received a call from UPG group, specifically a gentleman named Alan Goldstein. They would not provide any further information than the claim of a defaulted PDL from 2011.  In addition, they would not provide supporting documentation unless I provided them with a payment arrangement, i.e. a debit or credit card. Also stated that UPG is not an acronym for anything, it is just UPG. He refused to provide a mailing address.  By law, they have 5 days to send out a debt validation letter, once initial contact is made. Do not send any money. If harassment continues, I will take any and all steps to shut them down.

I received call also, voice mail.  What do u mean "by law"? Is this "initial contact" directly speaking to them? Not a voice mail? How do they need to send this within 5 days?  I also continue to receive an email from a company I've never heard of stating I owe $1080 & they have my ss#!! I email asking for my info. .but they never respond. What to do?

    >> What do u mean "by law"? <<

Which part of the word "law" do you misunderstand?

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:

    * Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money.   ["Written" means snailmailed ... not emailed or texted]

    Source:
    https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit  the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:
    http://www.consumerfinance.gov/blog/debtcollection/

If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

I got a call from them today saying I owed on a payday loan I actually did lend from in February of 2012, however I contacted the lender themselves and they said I payed my loan off and that I never was delinquent. The lender even emailed me a letter stating my loan was paid off with the date of the original payoff from may 2012. When I called this number back asking for them to mail me proof of the account they had in their office I got handed off to 4 different people two of them supposed managers and they just kept repeating themselves saying I was refusing to pay. I told them that once they mailed me proof we would talk. Checked my bank account and the date of deposit they gave me even never had any funds deposited into my account. Plus the amount they are claiming was borrowed wasn't even the amount the lender had loaded me on the actual loan I did have. The lender has advised me not to pay or give them any information until they mail (usps) me proof. Same people as listed below.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

    Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
    (202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

This supposed "firm" keeps calling me at various times of the day with the same automated message stating that they are handling my claim in their "office" and since I have not retuned their calls, it's my responsibility to contact them ("firm") to prevent default status on the claim.  They also provided a file # ...??? What ?!?!?

Not only has this "firm" been harassing me, but they have called my family members and some friends and are threatening them that if I don't pay back $ (from a payday loan company???), they will be going after their homes and accounts to get $$$ etc...  Of course my family has been freaking out and I am very upset by all of this!!!
This is absolutely a ridiculous scam!!!  The messages don't even state their business firm name or the person's name wb scam artist/extortionist to be caught, fined, and dealt with in a way where they will serve time for such criminal acts!!!  Stop messing with innocent people and making their lives even more stressful !!!
This all needs to be stopped!!!
Oh and I've also received threats from a process locator telling me if I don't pay up, then basically they will find every way possible to screw me over and my family!!!
This is absolute nonsense and I'm going to report them to every Governmental department(s) that deal with these types of situations and "screw them over" instead!!!!!!!!

I've been receiving phone calls from UPG several times a day for about a month. I ignored them at first (after reading things like these posts about it being a scam). They started calling my parents, so I called them to make sure this wasn't a legitimate debt. They couldn't give me the name of the original lender. All they would give me is an amount and a date when I received it. To my knowledge, I have paid any and all debts I owed to payday lenders in the past. They refused to mail me any sort of validation notice. They said they could only e-mail me proof, and only after I had paid them. When I asked for the company name and address, I was told their name was UPG, LLC (and that it didn't stand for anything). They refused to give me an address for the "firm". I googled them, and the closest thing I could find was a UPG, LLC out of Buffalo, NY that's merely a privately owned name bought less than a year ago. From everything I've read on the FTC's website and other scam alerts, I won't be giving them a dime, no matter how many times they call or threaten me. I made it clear to them that I would be happy to pay off any debt I owe as soon as I receive written validation of that debt. You should do the same.

I,too, have been receiving phone calls from "UPG".  I haven't responded but now I'm worried that they are going to begin to harass my family. I have no idea how they received my information so I'm sure they can probably find my family numbers as well. I'm going to block their number from my phone. They also called me from another number. It is 844-399-9776.  Just so you all know!

Frustrated replies to You do not need to know.
My husband and son have been receiving phone calls from Alan Goldstein at UPG for weeks and the calls are getting more and more threatening, but UPG refuses to give either of them more information without a payment arrangement, i.e. bank account number.
I would be afraid to give them a street address to send a debt validation letter to in case they show up on the doorstep.  Although I've looked at the links on this website there seems to be little that can be done, especially without a mailing address for UPG.

I repeatedly receive calls from this number. The person(s) are looking for a "Jeremy" that l have no knowledge of. I have called numerous times to state I am not the person and have asked they quit calling, but the calls never stop. I am contacted by a different person. They give no info about the company, yet say they won't call again. I have reported this to numerous resources as well as have my number on the do not call list. They also call from (844) 284-9101 and reference claim numbers for the same person. PLEASE STOP THIS MADNESS!!

Checked with bank and know deposits from entity were deposit during stated period. Have requested a debt validation letter, company refuses to send infomation as someone keeps stated that their client has sent information previously numerous times, which is false.

Same garbage here. We got 3 calls in less than 2 hours with the same automated message they left. The frequency of the calls alone is in violation with the FTC. Give us a case # and threaten us with a default status.
