- Pittsburgh Scam Guru| 11 repliesReceived A Call From Local Number 724-978-0422. Voice Message Stated That I Needed To Contact Them As Soon As Possible Regarding Some Type Of Fraud Issue, Legal Matter, Yadda Yadda Yadda. I Called Them Back At 855-969-8587 & Spoke With A "Joanie Davis", Who Claimed That She Is Case Manager For "Merchant Receivable Services" Located In Fort Mill SC. Supposedly There Are Criminal Charges Pending Against Me For Bad Checks Related To A PayDay Loan. Of Course They Can't Mail Anything & Everything Has To Be Done Via Fax Or E-Mail. The 1st Lady I Spoke With Finally Relented & Said She Was Going To Mail Me Something Showing What I Allegedly Owe. I Called Back & Forced The Girl I Spoke With To Give Me Their Mailing Address: 9789 Charlotte Highway, Fort Mill SC, Suite 400-105....When You Google This Address, Ta-Da, It's Not An Office Building...It's A UPS Store.

- vince replies to Pittsburgh Scam GuruI got the same call today and asked them to mail the info that I borrowed money from Horizon. Still no email. I ask him if he was a debt collector and he said yes. By law he has to ID himself as a debt collector which he did not do.
- Ms. Mel| 3 repliesI got a call, 'Concerning a bad/fraudulent check linked to my SSN or my DL number, and to call 855-969-8587 for the John Hickey association. I didn't accept the call, nor call back, as I know I haven't sent out any bad checks. No company linked to what they stated was the name, and they called from an Unknow number. Beware of a possible scam.

- From Spokane, Wa| 8 repliesOur 28 year old daughter had credit problems and recently filed Bankruptcy, thereby discharging all debt. She does not live with us (we in our mid 60's and certainly don't welcome the stress of collection calls). We do not answer calls from unknown numbers (thank you for call ID); however yesterday a voice mail from a "Mike Alexander, check fraud investigator" from "MRG" was left for our daughter stating that a check "linked to our daughter by phone no. and SSN" had been referred to the company and it was imperative that she contact him/them asap, etc. First, all of you must understand that one's SSN is NEVER somehow "linked" to a check. Secondly, our daughter has a different phone no. than our home no. Initially, I was prepared to phone these knot heads back to provide our daughter's number and to verify the Bankruptcy....mainly to get the call(s) to stop. While I understand that a Bankruptcy doesn't guarantee future financial responsibility, the msg. that this joker had our daughter's SSN simply didn"t pass the smell test. So glad I first decided to Google this phone number: 855-969-8587. I intend to pass this information along an appropriate agency....anyone out there know where to go in that regard?

- From Pennsylvania| 1 replyReceived a call from Eric Holt who identified himself as a lawyer for Premier Litigation and it was the same old story about an unpaid pay-day loan. I explained to him that I had repaid any payday loan that I had several years ago through PDL Assistance and asked him not to call me again. Well of course he called me again. This time from phone number 814-240-0547, which it turns out is a pre-paid cell phone. I asked him for his address and he stated that it is Merchant Rec. 9789 Charlotte Highway, Ft. Mill, SC 29707. I asked him during both calls to mail me information stating the amount that I supposedly owe. He hung up on me after my second request. I filed a complaint with the FTC for harassment.

- AnonymI received a call from 855 969 8587 for a family member. I told them that person does not live here and please stop calling. They advised me that I was on the account as well for fraudulent checks. I responded with some not so nice words and said it was bull.... and he did not like my language. I furthermore expressed my feelings and hung up. The caller proceeded to call me back and said "mam, since you cursed and used fowl language, I am going to make your life a living hell." I replied FU and hung up. I never wrote a bad check or had a joint account with my child.

- Phyllis replies to Robert| 1 replyYes I got a cal on my cell on yesterday and it was a restricted number. They said I did not pay back a pay day loan that was in 2006 they charged it off in 2011 and they got it on their desk on yesterday. They got all my information. SOC number.. address everything.. I told them that whatever loan I had back in 2006 was paid. They wanted me to verify my address and I said No. The transferred me to another lady. And why if I didn't pay the bill back then why I did not ever get any bills from them. I bought my house in 2008 and it was not on my credit report. My Son told me that it sounded Fishy. I am glad I decided to check into this number this mornng. Oh she told me she was going to hold off on sending me anything via mail until I could check and find out if she was telling me the truth.

- Illinois| 4 repliesSeveral calls from Johnathan Hickey stating I am being investigated for check fraud as a bad check has been linked to my SSN/DR and to call back at 855-969-8587. There was a recorded voice who stated my name and investigation number. I know this is false because I pay all my bills including rent online.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers. - samebs replies to PhyllisI've had people threaten with that for YEARS...regarding a payday loan from 2003 and for me signing for someones bond. They sell these debts to companies (which you get the calls from) and they try to effect you with scare tactics and threats. None of these things are legal in a court of law, so they will NEVER file papers with courts. One company called me a couple years ago and I told them..."PLEASE process the papers with the courts so I don't have to hear from YOU anymore, PLEASE!" Have not heard from them since. Phony [***].....
- Privacy Enforced-CrOoKeD world!I've received these calls for months. SCAM!! Do not let these crooks scare you into this garbage. Old records get in greedy hands & look what happens - idiots! These people are FRAUDS! " Beware, "Misery loves company!"

Wish I could stop them I think it's time to change my phone number . Used to just block the numbers they call fom now they just used private numbers

- Not us| 9 repliesWe got one of those calls today, too. Bad check, linked to SSN and DL#. First of all, don't use checks. Secondly, there is a statute of limitations on collecting, so if it's past your state's law on that, all they're doing is harassing, We've been getting a rash of different calls --all the time-- from different companies using different scams. So be careful on answering and volunteering your personal information, because the minute they get it, your're goose is cooked. Just ignore their butts--unless you really owe a creditor, do it with your local office that you owe, not caving in to some out of state scammer trying to convince you he is good and right and you are wrong and bad. If you had owed that money they would have sued you already before the statute of limitations expired.

- Mike in MD replies to Not us| 4 repliesThe statute of limitations only applies to suing in court to force payment, not their right to attempt collections. As long as they are in compliance with the FDCPA they can continue to attempt to collect. See this link:
