If you get a call from area code 202 claiming that you have computer viruses, or claiming to be the IRS and say you owe unpaid taxes, or even a shady sounding debt collector, just hang up.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers. - MarciaScam phone call

- sher| 1 replyThey call me off and on I never answer or call back always claim I will be arrested amazing how many times they are coming to get me. It's crazy I hope by ignoring the calls will stop. I believe they want a response but as much ad I would like to tell them off I don't because I believe that will make it worse.
- CWG40 replies to PorshTotal scam. Most likely an Indian payday loan scam. Saying you own money and you are going to be arrested. Stupid scam.
These people are hard core scammers, they know your financial information and a lot of personal information. They pick on women, single mothers, the elderly and members of the immigrant community and anyone else they think is vulnerable.
Don't talk to them, don't return their calls. Block their calls. - CWG40 replies to sherYou are right. This is a total scam. Don't talk to them, do not return their calls. They are calling you because they think for some reason you are vulnerable. Also, like any criminal, they are extremely abusive if they find their scam is not working. Invest in a call blocker, because they will probably call you again on another scam.
Anytime anyone cold calls you with an Indian accent and 1. offers you something or 2. threatens you, you know it's a scam. - AnnReceived a call on my cell and my work number. Spoke with a Tammy Dickson and she asked me all the validation questions. Had my ex-husbands home address and said I took out a loan in October 2010. I never lived at that address and never took out a loan. She said that it was going to be reported unless I settled now. I told her that she could speak with my attorney and she hung up.

- hlfirm.com| 14 repliesUnfortunately, there are many people who have your problem. I have clients who have had their wireless numbers continuously called by telemarketers. Even numbers that are on the National Do Not Call List get telemarketing calls. There is a Federal Law called the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). It allows for an individual to recover up to $1500 for each violation that occurs. Calls to personal and business wireless numbers, using a pre-recorded message ( a robot on the other line asking you to press one to connect) or an ATDS (you say hello a few times and you hear a click sound, followed by someone on the other end of the phone), must receive prior express written consent when making a call, otherwise it may violate the law. Calls to a residential landline using a pre-recorded message are also most likely illegal as well. Unfortunately, the only real way to try and make these illegal telemarketing practices stop is by going after them and making them pay damages. I recommend you consult an attorney familiar with the TCPA to help you in this matter.

- Mike-in-MD replies to hlfirm.com| 13 repliesYou seem to be confused as to which law governs this caller which is bad for someone claiming to be an attorney. Debt collectors are not bound by the TCPA but by the FDCPA and state debt collection laws when contacting consumers and can only be sued for FDCPA or state debt collection law violations, not TCPA violations.
- DC Girl replies to jayDon't put down the whole area code friend. Just use common sense. If you don't recognize the number, don't answer folks. Simple as that. If it's legit, they'll leave a message.
