Unknown # called, hung up as VM started recording, leaving only a brief dial tone.

Rings funny.  That can't be good.

This is only my personal generic information about unwanted calls.  I am only trying to help out here (to those naysayers who complain about my long winded rant).

                                   Telemarketers

We do not have to be nice to these people ....................  If you don't take my advice of not answering the phone, when they start to talk just reply politely in your sweetest voice:  NO THANK YOU and HANG UP.  That's what I do.

"YOU ARE A TELEMARKETER, AND I DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH ANY COMPANY THAT USES TELEMARKETING AS A FORM OF ADVERTISING".

DON'T ANSWER UNKNOWN CALLS (If it turns out that you did not answer a call from someone you know, number not on this great web site, just call them back).

DON’T HAVE YOUR NUMBER REMOVED! (When you press the number to have your number removed, you confirm that your number is a working number and your known active number is sold to another scammer).

ROBO CALLS: There are 800 area codes with 9,999,999 numbers. Since Robots call every number in succession, they don't need to buy lists from anyone. The FTC receives 250,000 to 300,000 complaints per month, with robocalls responsible for around 60% of those complaints.

TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HOME PHONE: block, use call forward selective to 216-025-0434 (gives them a recording saying its disconnected) , or save calls to a phone address book as spam with a description (spam medical, spam alert, spam microsoft), and continue using this great site for information. MY HOME PHONE (Panasonic Link2Cell Bluetooth® KX-TGH263B LCD/2 Handsets) BLOCKS 250 NUMBERS AND THE ADDRESS BOOK HOLDS 3,000 numbers and the phone talks to you and says spam from across the room (like if you are up on a ladder or disabled).  As of September 2015 I have saved 313 names as spam and don't answer them.

TELEMARKETING:  (and I quote) "The Center for Investigative Reporting joined two news organizations in an investigation of groups that use telemarketers to raise money and found that most of the money is paid to telemarketers, leaving the charities with little, if anything. (3% in some cases)

Not only that but reputable charitable organizations don't solicit donations by phone.

Call from 1-224-704-0860 on landline. Caller ID says "Out of Area" and no voice message left. Online search indicate that this supposedly is from Des Plaines, IL but calling the number gets a message, "224-704-0860" is not a valid number." I reported to Do Not Call registry.

today it was the virus on my computer scam from "Windows" I politely told him to have sex with himself

A person with a European Indian accent said he was a computer technician and that I had a virus on my computer. He would need to remotely access my computer to remove it. I laughed and told him I wasn't interested in him taking control of my computer and hung up.

I got a call today and the caller I.D. said Not Available I answered and as he spoke in his Indian accent, I kept asking him if I got a new computer. He kept saying no I had a virus. I asked him if I had to be on the internet. I could never understand what he said. Every time he said the word computer, I asked him how soon I was going to receive the new computer. I told him I had to get my computer out of the closet for him to hold on. I placed the phone under a blanket so I wouldn't hear it. I forgot about it and the phone started beeping because the battery was about dead. Regardless, I think I frustrated the caller.

got the call on my cell.  "they" disconnected before cell went to VM.  2x today.

Answered the call, but they didn't speak.  Hung up after I started shouting as loud as possible.  Apparently this is the Microsoft computer scam - and have been getting lots of these.   Doesn't matter whether you NEVER answer the phone, or you block as many numbers as possible - these calls keep coming.  These folks are particularly idiotic.  They are calling from out of country, and many are reading a script that is beyond them to understand. Just a bunch of lowlife criminals.

Scammers trying to help fix a computer to rid it of germs

I know this is a waste of time, because you will do nothing about it.  The Do Not Call List is a joke.  Never been enforced and never will be.  Aren't you ashamed?

Your post displays your ignorance.

1.  We are not in control of your phone, we cannot block calls to your phone.
2.  The DNC list works as intended, and IS enforced, but you are unaware of the facts.
3.  I am not ashamed of my knowledge.
4.  Either you are a very ignorant person, a troll, or seeking a few milliseconds of notoriety.
5.  It is apparent that you cannot solve your own problems.

CID showed "unavailable". I never answer those calls, plus they always get blocked as soon as I can. No message left.

Maybe next time do some actual RESEARCH on what you're posting about-you'll come off as less ignorant

Windows tech scammer, after I told him I knew about the scam and would tell people about the number, he said that "You cannot tell anybody or legal actions will be taken"

Nope! I'm not ashamed, but you should should be ashamed of not paying attention ,watching or reading the news. So its never been enforced? What do you call this then?
