I hope the judgement is sold in $10,000 pieces to 8,200 debt collectors to hound them forever ...

I wonder if she will have to hire a debt collector to collect that?  Oh the irony if that happens.  Certainly couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of criminals (note sarcasm).  Hope this puts them out of business for good and all their little minion criminals are out of a job.  Unfortunately at that point we honest citizens will be supporting them with our tax dollars by paying them unemployment, subsidizing their Cobra plan, and probably giving them food stamps and welfare besides.

    From the article:

"If the assessment or damage amounts are upheld by the judge and the Missouri Court of Appeals, or if there is no settlement, half of the $82 million will go to the Missouri Attorney General’s office, which will deposit the money in a victims’ compensation fund."

    Does that help?

“In this case Portfolio Recovery didn’t know that our client had a different name than the account holder because they didn’t have the account documents. During the trial, Portfolio did not say it was at fault or express any remorse.”

    Of COURSE they didn't.

They better start practicing, though, if they want any chance at a successful appeal.

“We hope and expect the judge will set aside this inappropriate award, and we plan to file motions to make the request formally in the very near term. Any fair reading of the facts of this case makes plain that a verdict of this size is not justice by any means and cannot stand.”

Rubbish. They have more than received their share of inappropriate judgments against innocent consumers--and it's payback time.

My day has just been made. They harassed me years ago on a loan that wasn't mine, until they finally gave up. Couldn't have happened to a better/worse company.

I love it! Scambags. Trying to collect while not having the ocuments to prove the debt. Sums up the "ground" scam collectors stand upon. Their lawyer is walking in quicksand.

Mine, too. Though I know this woman will probably only receive a fraction of this judgment, it will still send seismic waves off the Richter scale enough to shake PRA and the industry as a whole to its foundations. Enough is enough.

I hear you, Rusty. They harassed my late BIL over an unvalidated and out-of-statute debt, even attempting to coerce him into selling his life insurance. It was only after we got the IRS involved (they turned in a bogus 1099-C, on top of everything else), that they finally gave up.

The best news I heard in a long time. But, like some others said, I really don't think their going to pay it.

Good point but a Google search for Debt Recovery Associates does show up as Portfolio Recovery and also shows a relationship to Stoneleigh Recovery Associates LLC and Debt Collection Associates LLC and an address check under bizapedia does show 29 alternate company names http://www.bizapedia.com/addresses/120-CORPOR ...
