Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

    Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
    (202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

Received a call from this # today and didn't answer but I've gotten similar calls from other numbers stating the same things that there is a warrant for my arrest and they will come get me at work if I didn't give them money. I said send me whatever you need to and I'll have my attorney look at it because this is the first I'm hearing of this and of course he hung up. I then went on abc news and found out it's totally a scam from some Indian guy in California who stole money from people and is now wanted by the law. You can look it up yourself if you don't believe me.

Received a call threatening me for jail at 11am. Obvisiously its a scam, first off understand debt laws. even if u did take a so called payday loan, they cant do anything to you. They first have to give you the so called debt in writing, then your given 30 days to decide if this is your debt, and so on. Look up debt laws, DONT GIVE THEM ANY MONEY! THREATEN THEM BACK< THEY WILL HANG UP>

Got a call from an unknown number, they advised that I won a government grant, gave me the grant ID of JJ1016.  Man had an indian accent, gave me his extension number of 127 and gave me a 360-347-1087 number to call back.  It was clearly a scam, and I hung up.  It was a little disconcerting that he had my name, address, telephone number, and email....

This is crazy. Just got a call on my cell as "unknown", which I usually don't answer. a man with an Indian accent told me that I was chosen at random to rec' a $10,000 grant from US govt. Yeah right!!! When I asked him why is the number he is calling from is unknown, he didn't have a response. I let him talk his BS while I was on line searching for info once he gave me the above number as a call back number. Was also given a gov. money confirmation number as RJ3911 that I have to give when I call back the 306-347-1087. When I explained that it was a scam and a crock...that the us is not going to give me   $10,000 cash in my hand to do with as I see fit.... that I am on line RIGHT NOW looking at this crazy stuff..... I hung up and  he called right back. I did not pick it up this time and I am not going to call the number., I live in Maryland.

Something has to be done about this.  They tried a government scam about rec' a $10,000 grant in cash in  my hand to do with as I want. I heard of other scams from the same number. I rec' a call on my cell as "unknown" but was given 360-347-1087 as the call back number and a confirmation code RJ3911 to rec instructions on how to rec my money. I am NOT going to call that number. I hung up on the called who had an Indian accent.  he called right back but I didn't answer. I live in Baltimore Maryland
