    These people get information from loan companies on people that did business with them.  They hope that you did what they are accusing you of and want you to "pay" to end the so called litigation.
    Do NOT do or pay anything without looking into it.

    They are a very convincing scam...do not pay them. They had my social, my email, my bank info but I had never taken out a loan but they sounded so convincing that I nearly fell for it. Do NOT fall for it!  They say they are from API but it is a scam. I called a lawyer to be sure and the police, who both agreed, this is a scam. People get scared and pay them the money.  The lady said her name was Kara or Cara Gentry with API and they are a total scam. Just hang up.

I still wouldnt pay until I get enough information and get a lawyers input. RESEARCH the call, you'd be surprised how many con-artist 'companies' do these kind of things.

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    •Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    I don't answer but I get messages that say she is Kathryn Ballard with the fraud division.  Doesn't say fraud division of what just that I need to contact by close of business.  Been going on for months.  Same woman calls on alternate weeks and the message is the loan I defaulted on is due in full and they cannot accept checks to contact with my bank info.  I've never answered these calls and if I disconnect the call while it's ringing they just call back. So I just delete the messages since I have no loans.

    I received the same voice mail with no identifying information, just a woman who said her name was Katherine Bower with fraud division. She wanted me to call them right away.  When I did, the person who answered the phone said she (Katherine) was on another call and she informed me that criminal charges were being brought against me for failure to pay a payday loan company who I had never heard of until today and that it was a felony offense. I told her I never heard of that company before and she said " so you are disputing this claim" I said yes and she said "well get a criminal lawyer and we will see you in court"  then she hung up on me.  When I called back I got another woman who told me the woman I had just spoke to was also on another call and I would have to speak to her. The pay day loan company they mentioned was net loan usa. I had never used this payday loan company before. They really had me worried so please beware.

    Same story here..Kathryn Ballard from check fraud calls from various numbers. Then when I call back so other person answers. They told me I owe 1600$ for a loan they even had my old addrss and bank info, good thing I don't use that or live there anymore. It's all a scam, the girl told me I wasn't getting a debt letter and that she was going to apprehend me. I started laughing she hung up and called back again, she told me she was filing felony judgement. I asked if I could have the affidavit number. She told me no again. So if they are filing charges why do they keep calling giving me another chance. They are a scam, just give them hell back..it's all a scam

    Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

    Washington, D.C.
    December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
    (202) 324-3691

    — filed under: Press Release

    The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

    According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

    The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.
