Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

    Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
    (202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

Continual calls daily...When you return the call you have to hold for so long.  They don't ever give you the name of their company.  They just answer and ask you to hold please.

I have been receiving these same calls for about 4 years now. They call family members that I have never even listed as a reference. They buy names and information to use against their victims. I contacted the states attorney's office in California because that's where some calls where coming from. They told me that 1 it's a scam and 2 even if I did have a payday loan as long as I had made at least one payment on it then they could not prosecute me for check fraud. The only thing they can do is file to your credit report if it's a legitimate loan. They could take you to court like a credit card company but they have to prove that your intent was to never pay the loan if you actually have one. Follow Tamianth's links above to report them or change your number. They prey on those that don't know their rights and the laws hoping people will be scared and fork over money. I hang up and block them.

Unfortunate after affect from applying for or getting payday loans. I just decline and block those calls.  They especially are hot and heavy during holiday times, tax time, etc.  I haven't haven't had a loan in over 4 years (which were paid in full) and I still get these calls.  I ain't changing my number anytime soon.

Never answer a phone number from any area you have no dealings with. This number called my cell phone twice while zi was on the phone with a friend. I just blocked the number because I have no idea who or what it is about. If they have all the info they would contact you by mail first

Not Sorry Unwanted Calls Do Not Ring
Spam caller.  Spam calls automatically-do-not-ring:  On my cell phone, I've installed "Call Blocker Free - Blacklist" by NQ Mobile Security.  It is useful for non-business phones to only accept calls from phone numbers I want, incoming unwanted calls automatically do not ring  (rings on the spam caller end of the call, but not the recipient end and shows in the app instead of the phone call log).  I go to the app>Main screen>Funnel icon>Blocking mode> change it to:  "Accept ONLY FROM WHITELIST and CONTACTS".  Add the phone numbers you wish to receive calls from to your Contacts (keep your Contacts up-to-date as normal) and/or add non-contacts that you wish to receive a call from to the app Whitelist.  With my phone carrier service, I also turn voicemail OFF  so that it doesn't pickup a spam call after its set time to record.
