- K| 2 repliesWe got a call from them as well saying we got a $15000 loan and we never got a loan of this amount. When I told him that we did not get any loan of this sort he told me that my husband got this loan with his girlfriend and that they had proof of him being with her at certain hotels. I told him he was lying and he told me to leave him. This is a big scam for money. They told him they would have him arrested if he did not pay. I called the Detective of our city and he informed me that it is illegal to do all of what they said. They wouldn't even tell us where the loan was from. People please don't fall for this nonsense.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers. - JC replies to KI also just got the same call at 8 pm at home. They have my SS# and all my info. They're foreigners from Iraq living in Texas. I told them to go ahead and send the police and to kiss my ass. They don't know I am a city deputy!
- BryanSame things. Pieces of sh$t. Someone close these idiots down
- KimBeen getting the same calls for the past several days. That's what I get for applying online for 1 payday loan and end up with multiple emails and phones calls then I get this call and they almost had me but decided to Google the law firms name and its a scam. Sterling Law Firm talked to a Derek Smith and he also told me that I would be arrested & have to sit in jail for 21 days. Thought it was funny, Hope this helps other people to be careful.
- Ashley| 1 replyLeft a message at my work to call an "Andy Parker" with Sterling Law Firms. When someone answered, the gentleman requested my name to look up information saying it was one of his colleagues that called and that the reason was in 21 days a lawsuit of some sort was being filed against me and that tomorrow I would be visited at my home address by an investigating officer. Never stated why a lawsuit was being filed against me, but asked if I had an attorney. I told him my uncle was an attorney and he inquired as to what type of attorney he was and also said that my uncle would not be able to 'save me' because he wasn't the right type of attorney. I played along with this sham for awhile but at this point I decided to ask him for the address of the law firm he was calling from. Now, if this was a legitimate law firm I don't think they would ask 'Why?' So I just told the flat out truth and said that I needed the address so that I could investigate if he was a scam artist. At this point he loses his cool and starts saying things like he hopes I'm there when the officers comes and that I'm going to be led away in handcuffs and he hopes God is with me and blesses me behind "the bars." Seriously? Who do I talk to so that these jokers leave me alone? I have had over 20 phone calls a day for the past week from various pay day loan frauds and all of them seem to have the same strange accent. Is it legal to call and harass them?
- Caller: Sterling Law Firms
- ricky replies to walter skudlarekthey called me too and even call my job saying it a sterling law firm and the I should pay 9000 dollars but I didn't take any loan

Consumer debt in America is *not* a criminal matter and collector claims are not typically sent straight to a judge. Lawful debt collection is a process, not an ambush, and you are due a chance at each stage to raise a dispute.
