- Thia replies to Evelyn| 1 replyShill alert! A poor attempt at one, as well.
Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law. - Gary| 1 replyIts a legal department for a collections office. When clients try to purse you legally due to not payments , they attempt one last time before taking you to court....
- Caller: 855-207-5439
- Call type: Debt collector
- BrittanyI realize its fake when they don't tell you right away that the call may be recorded for 'Quality'. Plus you can hear everyone is the back ground, and also if you are like me and you check your credit on a daily basis, you know who you owe and how much you owe.
- DeDe| 2 repliescall on my husband's cell phone never use this number for businesses, no message left. just the number 855-207-5439, no name on caller id. We have no past due debts. Need to know how to stop these calls to cell.
- Caller: no name on id
- Alfalfa replies to DeDeContact your cellular provider for assistance in blocking the calls. They should be able to tell you how to do it.
- Janet| 1 replyCall me every 15 minutes. Just answered phone and said "please put me on your do not call list". Let's see if that works. Please quit calling.
- Caller: toll free call
- Alfalfa replies to JanetThis is a criminal extortion scam. They have NO intention of stopping the calls. Contact your telecommunications provider or invest in a call blocking device.
- Ann-Marie T| 1 replySomeone named "Frank" with a pretty thick accent trying to sell diabetic products.
- JThey have called 3 times and never left a message. If it is important they can leave a message.
- ChrisNo message and they call several times in a day. Pretty sure this is bogus. I have no outstanding balances and have not authorized them to call this number. They do not stop calling after you request to be removed from call list.
- simonwrx replies to DeDeJust add ' Em to your "reject call list" on your phone.
- Jeanne| 1 replyI keep receiving calls from this number....I want them to stop immediately!!! I have not called this number and do not appreciate them continuously calling mine!!! When I try to call the number to tell them, I get a recording "thank you for calling technical support"...then it just rings a few times and disconnects. TELL THEM TO STOP CALLING ME
- Tamianth replies to Jeanne800notes is not affiliated with your callers, we are not calling you either. 800notes is a forum for reporting who calls you and any information you may have about the call to share with other forum users. It is highly doubtful that your callers are reading here also. We can't stop anyone from calling you either or remove from a list. Previous posters have indicated this is a extortion scam operation.
Consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.
