- broncos fan| 20 repliesThese people called me saying their from my county and they will be appearing to work my work place or living residents to give me papers if i dont meet with them it will be refusal and legal process will go on. Im not sure who these people are they say they are in my county but when they call me it shows up as restricted and they tell me to call them back at the 877 number. If they where calling out of my county why doesnt it show up under the regular area code. And you usually dont get a notice for severed papers im thinking these people could be scam artist.

- WolfmanJack replies to broncos fan| 10 repliesThis is a common ploy by criminals attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, etc. all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Just because a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt does not mean you owe it
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else a DIME until the debt is validated.
Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply block their calls and ignore them.
If they are bothering you,
Report them:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now. If you can find them. - CWG40ID themselves as ATS Mediation. (At least that's what it sounded like) Which is scam double-talk for debt collector.

- debt collector replies to WolfmanJack| 9 repliesreally? scams....huh? extortion....? well first off, nobody would have to call you, if you paid your bills. i like it when a bunch of deadbeats who don't pay their bills get together and try to figure out more ways not to pay what they owe. be lucky that people are making calls and asking for the money that you actually owe and didn't pay. if you owed a loan shark 10,000.00 they would be handling the matter a little harsher than phone calls. Oh by the way, if it wasn't for bill collectors recollecting a small portion of the debts that you deadbeats don't pay then all of America would be paying higher interest rates to fit the bill for you. everyone knows that you can't go to jail for not paying your bills(unless it's the IRS or child support), they did away with debtor jail over 100 years ago because it used to be a real thing. if it was real though, i'm willing to bet that everyone on this post would be there. Thank god for the constitution, I think of you everyday after serving my country honorably in the USMC. I risked my life to protect the freedoms of people whom have no honor. PAY YOUR BILLS!!!!!
- JUDY replies to white tiger| 4 repliesI thought the same thing until I missed a court date in regards to a payday loan i took out years ago, welp..... my check bounced thats what it was all about, i'm still paying my restitution and that was in November
- blueeyes2005| 1 replyI got calls first from a collection agency and I ignored it then I got calls from a courier and thought but I ended up calling and it was in regards to a check that I bounced when I had got laid off in 2013

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

One important thing to remember if these losers have any of your personal information such as your social security number, date of birth or drivers license make sure you register with identity protection notify the credit agencies as well as your banks!!
