Caller says from attorney about "papers" they have on their desk and if we don't call back will file in "district court".  Scam.  Wants you to give the your SS number.  No attorney named Jeffrey Sessions in state nor does call back number come back listed to attorney or other office

Recieved call for my son on my Phone and I returned the call after reading the message. When they asked I told them I was his mother. They asked when I would see him and I told them that I had not seen him in over a month. They quickly ended the call and that was it! I then thought to research the number and found that it was a Scam...

    No company name was given.

I got the same call just down.  "Due to security reasons, we can't give you more info"  I told her this was suspicious, and she was speechless.  They had my SS wrong too, but that didn't stop her.

I received a call from an unknown number requesting me to call Jeffery Cousins back at this 888 number,  because there was a case against me, but they did not even have my name correct, so I was assuming this was a scam.

Identified themself as John Davis saying they would file paperwork in District Court (no district or state), provided the 888 851 8741 phone number and a "case" number. Local State Bar Association search returned no results for the name or phone number provided. A Google search lead here. Identity protection company warning it may be scam or skip-tracing and not to give them any personal information.

Got the same call this morning. Same number, same senario. Threatened legal action if I didn't send them money. Sounded very legit as they had personal information that was somewhat correct except for I never defaulted on a payday loan! Said I was looking at doing time if convicted because the check I wrote to secure the loan bounced and that's a felony.

Criminals masquerading as debt collectors attempt to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged (they use the bad check or hot check claim a lot) and go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished without actually being sued or going to court, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money.  They will use the words “Mediator”, “Arbitrator”, or “Law Office” to make you believe that they are something other than a debt collector want-a-be and that they don’t have to follow Federal and State collection laws.  They do have to follow those laws, but they won’t.  They mention that they have received a Fax document, to create the sense of urgency.  They also tell you that if you fail to call them back you are "waiving your right to council", which is pretty much nothing but hogwash.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.

Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Received a call from 888-581-8741 about thirty minutes ago. They asked for my son. When I said I was his mother and he did not live here but I would be glad to take a name and number, the lady hurriedly gave her name and said it wasn't important she was calling for Jeffrey Cousins. I asked for her name again , she told me she was Michelle Taylor calling for Jeffrey Cousins. She gave me the phone number and case # 537679 as reference.
