Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers. - shenequa brownI was told I owe a payday loan and I would be arrested at my job. I do not have any payday loans

- Caller: 979-319-4170
- Homemaker replies to leah cRead Tamianth's post. Ignore the calls. Extortion scam. Show your boss her posts. Yes, it can be scary, but once you read them, you'll feel better and in control.
- Tamianth replies to leah cNot only that, but print it all out and take it to your boss as well , they can also file complaints and should! They also need to be aware of these extortion scams.
- CWG40 replies to KimberlyIgnore them. Total scam. They are Indian debt scammers. They will often give out the name of existing law firms in the US but their accent is so strong, you know they are either Indian or Pakistani. In any event ignore them.
- CWG40 replies to leah cThe calls are a nuisance. But you can protect yourself . See if your employer can install a call blocker. These are Indian debt scammers who go around calling and threatening people they think are vulnerable. They go after women, single mothers, the elderly and members of the immigrant community. Also anyone they think might be vulnerable because of past financial difficulty. These calls are not random. They have all your financial information and a lot of personal information.
Nobody is going to sue you and nobody can take away your DL except a judge or the DMV and they have to give you a hearing. This is America after all.
I'm sorry they got you, but it won't happen again.
Remember,if someone with an Indian accent calls you and 1. offers you something, or 2. threatens you, hang up because it is almost always a scam.
Never talk to these people, never call them back, if you do, you'll get nothing but abuse. The male Indian scammers love to sexually/verbally abuse women they talk to who don't fall for their scams.
Also read and understand Tamianth's notes. Women are especially vulnerable to this sort of thing. - CWG40 replies to ShannonNo company. Just a group of Indian scammer/extortionists working out of a call center. As such they are beyond the reach of US law. Protect yourself with a call blocker. Do not return their calls and do not talk to them.
- CWG40 replies to Rachel GarrisonIgnore! Total scam. Invest in a call blocker. Read Tamianth's notes! Don't return their calls don't talk to them. Block their numbers! It's important that you not talk to them. If you do and they sense you are vulnerable, then they will hammer you with repeated calls.
- CWG40 replies to veronica rochaIgnore. Indian debt scammers. They use existing US law firm names but their accent is so strong you can cut it with a knife and you can hear Hindi voices in the background. This guy is calling from an Indian call center. Trying to scare you into paying money to him by way of Green Dot money pak which is untraceable. They are preying on women because they think women are vulnerable in some sense.
Don't talk to them. But if you do, tell 'em to go to hell! Loudly! Tell 'em you know it's a scam and they are not getting one Rupee (Indian currency). That's what I tell 'em.
