There is a widespread IRS or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.
USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam

    Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

    Educational post:
This scam is also described as scam #11, here:
    http://phonehelp.2truth.com/facts_rev.html

If you were contacted by an IRS impostor, you may file a report, after clicking on this link:

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances- amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:

    Mark Choate (attorney)
My client received a call from (202) 241-2295 saying that she or her attorney had to call or else something bad would happen.  I'm her attorney.  I called.  The voice message system said "Revenue Service - wait to be connected" - then it said the voicemail was full.  I'm comfortable this is a scam.  Very aggressive.  Will report it to the New York Attorney General's office consumer protection folks.

    tired of idiots
These people are relentless and do not like it when you call them on their scam. I received my 1st call yesterday from 202-241-2295 which they made all the above threats and said that my attorney had to call Phillip Dawson or it would end very badly for me.  When I told him to stick Phillip Dawson's private parts up his, he went into a rant about how he was going to get this f--- b----. I called back and asked for the above person told them I worked for the District Attorneys office which I do and they went into a 2nd rant, hung up on me and then the next call I received, the caller ID actually showed up as the San Diego CA District Attorney's Office phone number. I am with another county within CA. I blocked the numbers and now they are calling me two days in a row today from 775-410-9097 and I just laughed which then threw this person into another rant.......
First off, the IRS does NOT call people, they send thier information via mail for all initial contacts. I have since filed a complaint with several law enforcement agencies including the San Diego District Attorneys Office, because this adds more severity to these idiots actions by using a law enforcements telephone number for fraudulent purposes.......
PS I called my attorney and my CPA.....they said scam and hang up on them....
