- B-Edwards replies to HorseclicksMight be worth calling. People will often travel great distances if they find the right horse. The red flags to watch out for are the same as for the Craigs List scam.
- If they don't negotiate the price and offer full payment without even seeing the horse. If they tell you they can't see the horse because they are in the military and about to be sent overseas, that is a sure sign of a scammer.
- They send a check for over the your full asking price, and then ask you to send them cash for the over payment. Or you are asked give the over payment to the person who shows up to take the horse. Scammers are able to make a fake bank or certified check, you can't be too careful about getting paid.
If you want to check out a buyer, ask for the name of their vet or the barn where they might board or train at. Look up the tack shops and feed stores in the area where the buyer is. If buy does not know the names of local tack shops, that is not a good sign.
Common sense is your best protection. I know people who will travel 1000 miles to check out a horse, but if you are selling a grade horse over 4-5 years old, is that something you would travel 1000 miles to even see? Or pay for shipping?
